She Wore Many Masks, and Ruled Them All
Beth held out another velvet box. "This is from me…." Inside was an exquisite brooch, inlaid with a photo of the whole family. "From now on, no matter where you go, we’ll be with you." Sloane couldn't hold it in any longer and burst into tears, throwing herself into her parents' arms. Jeffrey wiped his own eyes from the side. "Alright, alright, it's time to cut the cake." A five-tier cake was wheeled out, with "Welcome Home" written on it. Beth held her daughter's hand as they cut the cake together. "From now on, I'll be here to celebrate every birthday with you." Sloane reveled in her family's boundless affection, and every day was filled with happiness. But recently, she had noticed that Lucas was always leaving early and coming home late. Sometimes she wouldn't see him for the entire day. "Where's Lucas?" "He went out early this morning and isn't back yet." Sloane frowned. "Out again?" The Oliver Family StudyLucas was sitting around a table with the Oliver family, which was covered in wedding planning proposals. Jeffrey, wearing his reading glasses, scrutinized the timeline. "This part isn't romantic enough…" "I think he should propose on a yacht!" Shawn suggested excitedly. "Just like my uncle did!" Beth shook her head. "Too cliché. Sloane loves the starry sky. What about at an observatory?" Tony suddenly slapped the table, lowering his voice mysteriously. "We could build a real-life fairy tale castle…" Knock, knock, knock— A sudden knock on the study door made everyone freeze instantly. "Wh-who is it?" Shawn stammered, frantically shoving the proposal plans under the sofa. "It's me," Sloane's sweet voice came from outside. "Where did everyone go? Why has everyone disappeared?" Beth immediately stood up, using her body to block the remaining documents on the table. "Baby, wait just a minute!" She shot the others a look, and everyone scrambled to clean up the scene. Lucas stuffed a stack of photos into his suit jacket's inner pocket, Jeffrey pretended to cough to cover the sound of rustling paper, and Tony even shoved several planning sheets directly into his waistband. "Okay, okay, come in!" Beth opened the door just a crack, only after confirming the scene was "secure." Sloane pushed the door open and entered, looking suspiciously at the tense group. "What are you all doing in here?" "Ahaha…" Shawn laughed dryly, scratching his head. "We were discussing… uh… a new company project!" "Yes, yes!" Tony quickly chimed in. "That's right… the medical center project!" Sloane narrowed her eyes suspiciously. "The medical center? But I just saw you shoving things under the sofa…" she said, moving to bend down and check. "Don't!" Lucas lunged forward in one step, smoothly pulling Sloane into his arms. "Sloane, I actually needed to discuss something with you." "What is it?" Sloane looked up at him, her attention momentarily diverted. "It's just…" Lucas thought quickly. "Your birthday is coming up, and I wanted to ask what you wanted for a gift." Beth immediately jumped in. "Yes, yes! I wanted to ask that too!" Sloane tilted her head, her gaze sweeping back and forth between them. "You all got together… just to discuss my birthday gift?" "Of course!" Jeffrey stood up, leaning on his cane. "This is the first birthday we get to celebrate with you. It must be grand!"
