She Wore Many Masks, and Ruled Them All
When Lucas pulled Beth out of the water, the softness in her eyes was gone—replaced by cold, unyielding steel. She snatched the satellite phone Sloane handed her and said in a voice that could cut glass, “Seal off all maritime exits immediately. Activate Oliver family Protocol A.” Out at sea, Shawn led twelve elite guards in three speedboats, engines roaring as they split through the dark waves like arrows loosed into the night. At that moment, Sloane’s phone rang. It was her master. “The Soul Guild operatives have been taken care of,” came the calm but firm voice on the other end. “Their true target was Tony. Before they were caught, they dispatched another team to capture him. You must stay alert!” “I understand, Master,” Sloane replied, her tone steady though her eyes flashed with cold determination. The Soul Guild again. What were they really after? Minutes later, Shawn’s speedboat returned to the dock carrying the unconscious Tony. Beth immediately rushed forward. His face was pale, his brows tightly furrowed, and his lips kept murmuring, “Beth… run…” “His memories are unstable again,” Sloane said. She swiftly pulled out a silver needle and inserted it at the base of his neck. Tony’s breathing steadied, and he drifted into deep sleep. After checking his pulse, Sloane exhaled in relief. “He’s safe for now, but we’ll need a thorough examination back home.” During the drive back, Sloane relayed the full intelligence her master had sent. “Three hundred years ago, when the Soul Guild was destroyed, my grandmaster spared the guild leader’s newborn child and the child’s mother, hiding them in a remote place. No one thought that after all this time, the remnants of the Soul Guild would find them again. Mr. Tony is that child’s descendant. They want to take him back to rebuild the Soul Guild.” Beth stared at her in disbelief. “After all these centuries… what are they still so obsessed with?” Lucas’s laugh was dark. “So first they sent Dania to manipulate him—and when that failed, they resorted to kidnapping?” “Even more absurd,” Sloane said with a helpless shake of her head, “they discovered Mr. Tony’s success in business and decided he had the potential to ‘restore their order.’ They want to force him into becoming the new guild master.” The car fell silent. Then Shawn suddenly snorted with laughter. “So after all that drama, these idiots just wanted to guilt-trip a rich man into becoming their sponsor?” Sloane smiled faintly but continued, “You don’t need to worry anymore. My master said she and Mr. Gustin captured the remaining Soul Guild survivors. No one will ever threaten Mr. Tony again.” Beth’s eyes lit with hope. “Then… can they help Miles regain his memory?” Sloane’s expression softened, but regret flickered in her gaze. “My master said those remnants only carried the Soul Guild’s name. After three centuries, their true knowledge has long vanished. What they know now is nothing but fragments.” The light in Beth’s eyes dimmed again. She looked down at Tony, whose head rested in her lap, his hair still damp against her fingers. “It doesn’t matter… as long as he’s safe.” The car grew quiet again, the only sound the tires rolling steadily against the road. When they reached Oliver Manor, Sloane immediately began a full examination. Her hands moved deftly, mixing medicines and checking Tony’s pulse. “Mrs. Beth,” she said softly, “Mr. Tony’s condition is stable. He’ll wake up once the effects wear off. But…” Beth tightened her grip on Tony’s hand and finished the sentence for her. “But his memory will still be fragmented, won’t it?”
