She Wore Many Masks, and Ruled Them All
Beth thought to herself, If my daughter were still alive, she’d probably be just like this—kind, gentle, and warm. As the two of them talked quietly, a sudden shout echoed from upstairs. “Mr. Tony, where are you going?” “Mr. Tony, please don’t run around!” Sloane and Beth froze for an instant, then rushed out of the dining room. Tony was stumbling down the staircase, eyes wild with fear and confusion. “Where am I? Who are you people?” Beth ran forward, panic flooding her voice. “Miles, you’re awake? It’s me—it’s Beth!” “Who are you? Stay away from me!” Tony backed up so fast he crashed into the coffee table, sending it toppling over with a loud bang. “I don’t know any of you!” Sloane tried to calm him, speaking softly. “Mr. Tony, please—Beth is your wife. You were hurt, that’s why you can’t remember things right now.” “Lies!” Tony grabbed a vase and hurled it against the wall. The crash sent shards flying across the floor. “You’re all lying to me!” His hands went to his head, and he dropped to his knees with a cry. “My head—it hurts! It hurts so much!” Sloane quietly drew a silver needle from her sleeve, her tone gentle but firm. “Mr. Tony, it’s okay. We’re not here to hurt you.” As Tony looked up in confusion, Sloane flicked her wrist. The needle flashed through the air and struck his pressure point. Tony’s body went limp instantly, and Beth rushed forward just in time to catch him. Tears streamed down her face. “How could this happen? He doesn’t even recognize me…” Sloane checked his pulse, her expression grave. “It’s a side effect from the destroyed Emotional Lock. His memories are fractured.” “Someone help me,” Sloane called to the servants nearby. “Take Mr. Tony back to his room and let him rest.” Lucas and Shawn came running when they heard the commotion. Shawn hurried over, eyes wide. “What happened to Uncle?” Sloane gave Beth a worried glance before answering quietly, “Mr. Tony woke up, but the aftereffects made him lose his memory. He didn’t recognize Aunt Beth and tried to leave. I had no choice but to sedate him.” Beth’s gaze followed as the servants carried Tony upstairs, her heart twisting painfully in her chest. Sloane gently took her trembling hand. “I have an idea. Since the Emotional Lock affected his memories, maybe we can reawaken them by recreating moments from your past together—something that could reach him emotionally.” Beth wiped at her tears. “What do we need to do?” “Start from the strongest memories,” Sloane said after a moment’s thought. “Like your first date… or the place where he proposed.” Beth’s eyes brightened a little. “He proposed to me by the sea, inside a glass greenhouse filled with roses. It was right at sunset…” “I’ll handle it,” Shawn said immediately. “I’ll set it up exactly like that day.” “Wait,” Sloane warned gently. “We should wait until Mr. Tony’s condition stabilizes before we try anything.” “It’s fine, I’ll start preparing anyway,” Shawn said, already turning to go. “I think Grandpa still has a video of the proposal—I’ll get it from him.”“I’ll go check on Miles,” Beth said softly. “If he wakes up again, I want to be there.” After they left, Lucas stood beside Sloane, his voice low and heavy. “Mr. Tony and Aunt Beth used to love each other so deeply. Now they’re strangers.” “All because of Dania,” Sloane said bitterly. “Beth lost her newborn daughter twenty years ago, and now she’s losing him too.” She looked toward the stairs, eyes clouded with sadness. “It’s like life keeps testing her over and over. She’s suffered enough.”
