Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
Ugh! Men are all the same. Once they get what they want, they stop caring. If you weren't good at getting supplies, I would've ditched you a long time ago. Elena clenched her teeth as she thought to herself. Stupid old man! Once you get your wife's inheritance, I'm going to grab my share and leave you in the dust! I'll take the money, go back to my hometown, and start my own little business. I'll never have to put up with a man's attitude again! I'll be an independent woman in this new era. With that thought, she wiped away her tears and leaned gently against Owen, looking soft and fragile. "Owen, don't be mad at me. It's all my fault ... " Owen had just slapped her without warning, but seeing her now, with a red mark on her cheek and acting so sweet and pitiful, his anger faded. Elena really was a natural-born charmer—not like his wife, that old domineering tiger. His wife made some money and thought she could boss him around every day. There wasn't a bit of softness or femininity in her. He cleared his throat. "Alright, stop crying. It's not all your fault. Dexter was just too dumb. I even got him a police uniform, and he still couldn't scare Natalie!" Elena wiped away fake tears. "Poor Dexter ... That Natalie is really tough." Just mentioning Natalie made Owen's face go cold. Dexter Gatlin was only his cousin, and they didn't see each other much, but blood is blood. Getting killed by Natalie made Owen furious. He didn't care about Olivia anymore—now all his anger was aimed at Natalie.Still, he knew her situation. No matter how mad he was, he wasn't stupid enough to go after her openly. If he did, he'd end up just like Dexter. Owen gritted his teeth. "Let her be cocky for a few more days. Once things get back to normal, I'll make sure she ends up in jail!" Elena reminded him, "She's killed so many people already! If she goes to trial, she'll get the death penalty for sure!" Hearing that, Owen cheered up instantly. Yeah! The apocalypse is over—she won't get away with it. No point getting mad at her now. Feeling better, he pulled Elena close. "Babe, did that slap hurt?" Elena pouted. "I'm fine. I'm just worried about you." But inside, she rolled her eyes. Money's hard to earn, and this is disgusting.Men never care for real. Dexter just died, and Owen was furious a minute ago—now he's back to grabbing me. If he doesn't care about his own family, why would he care about me? Ha! Trusting men is a lifetime of bad luck. On the outside, she looked sweet and leaned into him. "Owen, you're the best." Seeing Elena act all cute, Owen felt his heart race and started dragging her toward the bedroom. But Elena wasn't in the mood for that. She'd just been slapped! She rolled her eyes. "Owen, Dexter's body is still upstairs. Shouldn't we help take care of it?" Owen frowned. "If we go now, Natalie might suspect me. Let's leave it for a couple days, then I'll say it started smelling, and I had to clean it up as the building manager." Elena was speechless. You really are ruthless. To keep him out of the bedroom, she kept making excuses. "Why don't we go out for a walk? I haven't been downstairs since the flood receded." Her distraction worked, and Owen agreed to take her out instead. They walked out the door and had just reached the third floor when they bumped into Braxton and Tiffany, who were coming back laughing and chatting. Owen and Elena stopped in their tracks, surprised. Weren't those two fighting? Braxton used to beat Tiffany all the time. The yelling was brutal. But now they're acting like nothing happened? Tiffany noticed them staring and nodded with a polite smile. Elena was curious. "Hey, you feeling better?"Tiffany paused, then pointed to her head. "You mean this?" She looked embarrassed. "I had a head injury before—wasn't all there for a while. Sorry you had to see that. Braxton helped me get better." Braxton helped her? How? Elena glanced at Braxton, not sure what to think. Was it all that beating and abuse? Is that some kind of weird cure ... ? Braxton coughed awkwardly and quickly changed the subject. "You guys heading out?" Elena snapped out of it and nodded. "Yeah, just going for a walk." Owen suddenly chimed in, "Hey, Natalie on the 14th floor killed someone again today. Scared Elena half to death, so I'm taking her out for some fresh air."
