Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog

Chapter 696 He Talks Too Much

Lucky had finally had enough. She turned on him and barked nonstop. "Woof! Woof! Woof!" Shut up! Country fool! Just shut up! Angus clicked his tongue. "Wow, your Dynamite has a terrible temper. Always yelling. Not like the one I raised. Let me tell you, mine was really fun—" Natalie, sitting in the passenger seat, snapped. She whipped her head around. "Close. Your. Mouth." Angus went silent at once. He even shrank back without thinking. This woman was way scarier than the dog. When she glared, she looked like a furious lioness. He leaned back awkwardly and didn't dare make a sound. Only then did the buzzing in Natalie's head ease a little. This man talked way too much. In two lifetimes, she had never met anyone this chatty. If she hadn't been worried about the three little ones, she would have closed the divider between the front and back seats a long time ago. She took a deep breath and glanced at the rearview mirror. Angus was pouting, curled up in the back seat, cowardly. Natalie frowned. After a few seconds, she reached into her pocket and pulled out a bag of gummies. Her tone softened. "You've been asleep for more than a day. Eat something." Cassian, who was driving, raised an eyebrow in surprise. Angus beamed. He took the food happily. "Thanks, Bonnie! You're so nice!" Natalie pulled her hand back and met Cassian's half-smiling gaze. She shot him a look. "Eyes on the road."Cassian pursed his lips. Still, he didn't mind being treated worse than a stranger. He knew Natalie well. She had definitely learned something from Martha. That deputy mayor's status in the base must be unusual. With Angus around earlier, Natalie had gotten into the car right away and hadn't explained much. But Cassian understood. Natalie only bowed her head to money. If it weren't for getting a submarine, she wouldn't put up with Angus's nonstop noise. Sure enough, once Natalie saw Angus happily chewing his gummies, she asked casually, "You're very close with your brother-in-law?" Angus lit up right away. "Close? We're super close!" He swallowed his food and started talking excitedly. "I'm telling you, we're like real brothers! Xavier even said it himself—oh right, his name is Xavier Forge. I haven't told you yet, have I? His parents named him that because—" Natalie twitched at the corner of her mouth. "You're off-topic again." She really did not want to hear another long story about his in-laws. "Oh!" Angus slapped his forehead. "What I meant is this, Xavier said it himself. After starting work, it became really hard to make close friends. Old classmates and childhood buddies drifted away because their lives went in different directions. In the end, I was the only one left. I'm his best friend. "Of course, we didn't get along at first," he went on. "You have no idea. When he first met me, he couldn't stand me. He thought I tricked his sister and wasn't a good guy. "Mainly because," Angus added seriously, "he's closer to his sister than he is to his mom. When he judged me as a brother-in-law, he was pickier than my mother-in-law choosing a son-in-law." Cassian, who was driving, noticed Natalie's forehead twitching. Trying not to laugh, he smoothly changed the subject."Angus, since you're so close to your family, you must really miss home." Angus nodded right away. "Of course! If I died out here, I wouldn't even be able to rest in peace. Thanks to you two—" Natalie glanced at Cassian with approval. Nice move. He pulled the topic back without any effort. Angus might talk a lot, but he wasn't clueless. As he swallowed the last gummies, he said to Natalie, "Don't worry. I never forget kindness. I won't let you save me for nothing. Once we meet Xavier, I'll make sure he helps you get the best place to stay." Natalie looked back at him. "We're not here to settle down." Angus froze. "Huh? Then why did you come all this way?" Natalie turned forward again and met his eyes through the rearview mirror. A small smile curved her lips. "We just want to buy something." "Buy something?" Angus didn't even ask what it was. He patted his chest confidently. "Leave it to me!" Natalie replied calmly, "You trust Xavier that much? How are you so sure he has real influence in the base?" "It's because I know him," Angus said with a sigh. "He has a strong sense of responsibility. Just like those heroes in history books, he cares about people like they're his kids. He'd never just focus on surviving alone. He'd definitely build a base and do something for the citizens." As he spoke, he pulled out the cigarette Natalie had given him earlier and tried to light it. He fumbled around, only to realize he didn't have a lighter. After patting his pockets in a panic, it finally hit him—he was in someone else's car. No smoking.
