Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog

Chapter 691 The Power of Belief

Maybe this was the power of faith. Natalie felt she had learned just about everything she could from Martha, so she got ready to leave. Before going, she double-checked one last thing. "If someone isn't a believer," she asked, "can they still enter the chapel?" Martha nodded. "Of course. Non-believers can go in anytime. Once you become a believer, you can't just walk in anymore." Natalie blinked. "Why not?" Martha explained, "The chapel can only hold so many people. We can't let all the believers rush in at once. We follow a schedule for worshiping the goddess and listening to the Shepherd's sermon. As she spoke, she pointed toward the white building. "Today it's Group Ten's turn. Yesterday, it was Group Nine." Natalie asked, "Peacehaven is huge. What about believers who live far away?" Martha looked proud. "You thought of that, so do you think the Shepherds wouldn't? Peacehaven has more than one hall. The Shepherds have vehicles. They travel around and give sermons in different places." Then she added warmly, "Don't worry. Once you become a believer, you won't need to think about these things. Just listen to the Shepherd and worship the goddess." Natalie asked again, "Is the top official also in Group Ten?" "No," Martha replied. "He's busy with official work. He has certain privileges. He can attend whenever he wants. He doesn't need to follow the group system." Natalie frowned. "Then how do you know he'll be there today?" "I heard someone mention it casually during yesterday's sermon," Martha said. "They said he planned to go today." She paused and added seriously, "Even if it was said casually, we believers never lie."Natalie had nothing more to ask. She said goodbye and pulled Cassian along to leave. But Cassian suddenly turned back. "If a Shepherd ordered you to attack a government leader," he asked, "would you do it?" The woman answered without hesitation. "Of course. The Shepherd delivers the will of the divine. Whatever they tell me to do, I will do." Cassian looked at her, said nothing more, and left with Natalie. Back at the vehicle, the pets rushed over happily. Natalie rubbed Lucky's head twice, then went over everything they had just learned with Cassian. So far, it seemed that everyone in Yloria had gathered in Peacehaven and joined an organization called Dawnlight. The submarine they wanted was likely still in the hands of the government. From what Martha said, the government still controlled the military and its weapons. But aside from that, most other authority seemed hollowed out. Judging by how people acted today, Natalie guessed that if the government didn't still have heavy weapons, the official base in Yloria might not even exist anymore. What she couldn't understand was this—if the government leader was already a believer, how had he managed to keep control of the military and its resources? According to Martha's attitude and the reactions on the street, these believers obeyed the Shepherd without question. If a Shepherd asked for supplies, they would hand them over. If a Shepherd asked for their lives, they would offer them up with both hands, all for the "goddess." So why hadn't that leader given up all his power and resources? Was Dawnlight something the government itself had created? Or was his faith only an act, hiding some other plan beneath it?While Natalie was still thinking, loud shouting suddenly came from behind them. "Oh my goodness! Why is it so dark? Did I go blind?!" "Ow! Why can't I move?! Is anyone there? Help!" Natalie and Cassian exchanged a look. Angus was awake. True to his name—strong as an ox. He had taken a full pack of knockout drugs, yet he still woke up after just over a day. Before his shouting turned into full-blown panic, they quickly walked over and opened the trunk. Sunlight poured in at once. Angus winced and shut his eyes on instinct. At the same time, a cold female voice rang in his ears. "Why are you yelling?" Angus slowly adjusted to the light and cracked his eyes open. Only then did he see the two faces in front of him. His memory snapped back into place. "Oh! Right! I made a deal with you." He laughed awkwardly. "Sorry about that. I slept like a log. Took me a second to remember." He gently rolled his stiff neck and muttered, "Man, that nap was rough. Why do I feel more tired after sleeping?" Cassian stepped forward and began untying the ropes on him. Angus stayed still and let him work, but he couldn't stop talking. "Why'd you tie me up and stuff me in the trunk anyway? Worried I'd run?" He shook his head at the idea. "As if I could outrun a car on foot. No way. I knew it back then; you had to have a vehicle. And look at this thing! Wow. This car is seriously impressive." Neither Cassian nor Natalie bothered to respond. Once the ropes were fully removed, Natalie picked up the backpack beside them and tossed it to him. "Your stuff," she said simply. "All there."
