Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
Martha kept talking, full of energy and detail. The people around them turned back to their own business. The small street grew noisy again, as if nothing strange had just happened. "It's because we sinners have committed too many wrongs in this world," Martha said. "That's why Skygod became angry and sent punishment. He brought the endless apocalypse upon us. "But our merciful Dawnmother—our mother—she is full of kindness," Martha went on. "She wants to give us one more chance. She promised that as long as we truly repent, she will save us. She will protect us from disaster and let us return to heaven to live in peace again." Natalie couldn't help interrupting. "Who told you all this?" Martha looked at her like the answer was obvious. "Of course, the great Dawnmother herself!" Natalie had no words. "You can hear a god talking to you from the sky?" She didn't say the rest out loud, but in her head she was already wondering if this woman was hearing things. Martha waved her hand quickly. "Oh no, no. I don't have that kind of ability. I'm just a normal person. How could I be worthy of hearing the goddess's voice? It was her messenger who told us." "A messenger?" Natalie caught the key point. "Who?" "Our Shepherd," Martha said. "Dawnmother sent him here to pass down her will and save us. "The Shepherd has done so much for us. He guided us to live here. He taught us how to be better people. He helped us settle down, live peacefully, and atone for our sins together." "The Shepherd?" Natalie finally asked, "What religion is this, exactly?"Martha crossed her hands over her chest again and spoke with deep respect. "Dawnlight." Natalie's jaw dropped. No word came out. The only thing she could think of was that this name sounded like some pagan belief in some sort of game. Dawnlight? She had never heard of it. Everything about it—from the name to the beliefs—sounded completely made up. She couldn't understand why these people believed in it so deeply. Natalie didn't want to listen anymore. If she kept hearing this, she felt like she might start losing her mind too. So, she went straight to the point. "If none of you go to the official base, does it still exist? Who's in charge there?" Martha clearly had no interest in the official base. She answered casually, "It's still there. The authorities are powerful. How could they just disappear? They have plenty of guns and ammo." Natalie asked right away, "Then where exactly is the official base?" Martha pointed east. "Over at Lakewood Forest Preserve. Inside the park." Natalie knew Lakewood Forest well. It was one of Drakoria's most famous scenic parks. It had a long history and breathtaking views. Every year, huge numbers of tourists came to visit. The area was so large it was bigger than many small counties. Now that she had the information she needed, Natalie was ready to leave. But Martha kept talking. "As for the top leader of the base," she said, "I don't know his name. But he's a good man. At this hour, he's probably in the chapel, listening to the sermon." Natalie froze mid-step. She turned back in disbelief. "You mean the base leader is also a Dawnlight believer?" Martha nodded. "Of course. Otherwise, why do you think that base still exists?" She leaned in closer, lowering her voice like she was sharing a secret. "Because our goddess allows it." Natalie and Cassian were speechless. An official leader actually believing in this? No matter how they looked at it, this Dawnlight group sounded unhinged. It didn't even feel like a real cult. At least cults usually hurt people or cause real trouble. This one sounded more like it told people to let go of bad thoughts, live peacefully, and work together to survive the apocalypse. Was that why the official leader joined? Or was the Shepherd actually sent by the authorities to calm people down and keep things stable? Before Natalie could finish thinking, Martha spoke again. "If you want to live in Yloria, you should go to the chapel and listen for yourself. Learn how things work." She winked at Natalie. "Trust me. I meant this well. I'd never harm you." Then she added, "Mainly because I can tell your sins are very light. You're perfect material for becoming a saintess." That was the second time she had said Natalie's sins were light. Natalie grew curious. "What's a saintess? And why are my sins light?" If cursing, complaining, and greed all counted as sins, then she had plenty. She didn't just curse people; she killed them afterward. Martha pointed at Natalie's face. "Because you're pretty."Natalie froze, then almost burst out laughing. That reason was way too shallow. "So if you're good-looking, your sins are lighter?" Natalie said, pointing at Cassian. "Then wouldn't his sins be even lighter?" Cassian's looks were on another level. Natalie knew she couldn't compete. But Martha shook her head hard. "No! His sins are extremely heavy. Much worse than normal people's. He needs deep repentance. The Shepherd would have to purify him several times."
