Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
Lucky wandered over to the edge of the pond, moving slowly and unsteadily. Cassian stayed behind and carefully checked the helicopter, looking for any damage that might need fixing. Natalie didn't really understand the mechanics, but she stayed with him anyway. They chatted on and off for a while. Cassian finally asked, a little curious, "What do you want to show Lucky?" Natalie answered, "People from the south dream about snow. People from the north dream about..." "The ocean," Cassian said, understanding right away. Natalie nodded. "Lucky grew up during the apocalypse. She has never seen the ocean. Since we're in a coastal city now, I want to let her see something different." Times like this were rare. Traveling far was almost impossible these days. This might be the only chance Lucky ever had to see the sea, so of course Natalie wanted her to experience it. After making sure the helicopter was fine, Cassian straightened up and glanced toward the pond. "Cash and Baron haven't seen it either," he added. Natalie laughed, half amused and half helpless. "Are you worried I'll play favorites and leave them out?" Then she explained, "Of course not. All three of them will go together." After a short pause, she added, "And I'll bring you too." Cassian raised an eyebrow. "So in your eyes, I'm in the same category as them?" Natalie teased him. "Yep. You're all my beloved pets. You're the boss. Lucky is second, Cash is third, and Baron is the youngest." Cassian narrowed his eyes slightly. "That's a dangerous thing to say." They joked around for a bit. Then Natalie pushed him lightly. "Alright, enough messing around. Let's go." She muttered under her breath, "Good thing I can control the direction and distance when exiting the storage space. If I could only come out in the same spot, we'd be in real trouble." They had entered the storage space while still in the air. If she couldn't choose where to exit, hiding inside would only delay death. They would still fall and crash sooner or later. Being able to control the exit changed everything. To make things easier, Natalie left Cassian and the animals inside. She exited the storage space alone. The moment she came out, her body dropped into free fall, plunging straight down. She timed it carefully and used several rapid short-distance flashes downward, each about 330 feet. On the final flash, she landed safely on solid ground. Natalie let out a long breath and calmed her racing heart. Then she looked around. The land was flat and wide open. Snow stretched as far as she could see. There wasn't a single footprint anywhere. It was clearly an empty wilderness on the edge of the city. After checking again and again to make sure no one was around to witness her sudden appearance, Natalie finally relaxed. She releases Cassian, Lucky, Cash, and Baron from the storage space. The moment Cassian appeared, he checked her over with worry. "Are you okay? You didn't get hurt, did you?" Natalie lifted her chin. "Of course not. It wasn't that hard." Cassian laughed at her smug look. "That's good." Then he glanced around and said, "We're still pretty far from the warehouse." When they crashed, they had only just entered Olissea. Their position was near the far west side of the city. The warehouse, however, was on the far east side. That meant they had to cross the entire city. "No problem," Natalie said easily. "We have a vehicle." As she spoke, she pulled the Knight XV out of her storage space. Then she took out the snow tracks. Cassian told her to rest and got to work himself, fitting the snow tracks onto the wheels. Natalie took a cup of hot milkshake from her storage space. She sipped it quietly while waiting nearby. Cassian didn't have a storage space like hers—no cheat tool to rely on. Yet he handled almost everything else. Heavy labor, small chores, even washing dishes and housework—he did it all. Natalie watched his focused side profile and drifted off for a moment. He worked fast and clean. No matter the task, he solved it quickly and perfectly. It was hard to imagine that he used to be a CEO, always surrounded by butlers, assistants, managers, and staff. Cassian felt her stare. The corner of his lips lifted. Without looking back, he said while adjusting the tracks, "We're outside. Try to behave." Natalie froze. Then her ears burned red. "What are you even thinking?!" Cassian's eyes curved with more amusement. "We're married. Thinking that is not a crime." Afraid he'd take it even further, Natalie raised her voice. "That's not what I meant! I just think you're very down-to-earth." Cassian paused and turned to look at her. "What?" Natalie answered honestly. "I mean, you're really capable." It took Cassian a second to process that. Then he smiled softly. "Thank you for the compliment. Your husband will work even harder." What?! Natalie's mind went blank with a loud boom. Her face flushed bright red. "Just do your work! Stop being so cheesy!" Cassian raised an eyebrow. "Cheesy? What was so cheesy about it?" He only called himself her husband once, and she was already this flustered? Wasn't she always saying she was "a woman with the presence of an eagle"? Since when did an eagle get shy so easily?
