Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog

Chapter 661 He Said No

"I don't agree!" Jarvis's face was dark with anger. "Cut the nonsense. Grab a few important things," he snapped. "Once I'm warmed up, we leave right away." Matthew refused to back down. "There's so much stuff here. Why only take a little? The enemy escaped by plane. That means they're going far. If we take so little, we'll starve on the road!" Jarvis frowned. "When have I ever let you go hungry?" Matthew opened his mouth, then closed it again. He had no answer. Jarvis was right. They never had much food, but wherever they went, they took what they needed. Somehow, they always managed to eat. Still, Matthew felt uneasy. There were fewer and fewer survivors now. The population everywhere had dropped to less than one-tenth of what it used to be. Supplies were getting harder to find. Where was he supposed to keep looting from? There was so much stuff here. How could they just leave it behind? But Matthew never had much say around Jarvis. Under that pressure, he could only obey. He began packing, trying to stuff in as much food as he could. Yet, something felt off. The quality of the supplies was poor, and the way they were arranged was strange. It looked like leftovers—things someone else had already picked through. While Matthew packed, Jarvis drank the hot water he had just boiled. He held a feather in his hand, checking it again and again to confirm the enemy's direction. The helicopter had gone southeast. Jarvis frowned deeper. This was a problem. Outside, the world was frozen solid. Chasing on foot was impossible. They needed a vehicle first. But in weather like this, regular cars wouldn't work. They had to find a heavy truck or a snow vehicle. The two men stood there, both with tight expressions. Selene was the only one in a good mood. She had thought her peaceful days were over. Instead, these two fools were leaving just like that. They wanted to take some supplies? Fine. Let them take them. How much could they really carry? This warehouse was packed. The quality wasn't great, but it was still a huge amount of wealth. Just the winter clothes alone could be traded for so many useful things. She watched Jarvis stare at that feather and almost laughed out loud. This guy's behavior was so strange. Anyone who didn't know better might think he was in love with that rooster. She was still holding back her smile when Jarvis suddenly spoke. "Hey, miss," he asked bluntly, "where can I get a car?" Selene wiped the smile from her face. She froze for a second, then shook her head firmly. "No idea. There definitely aren't any in the ancient city." Even if she did know, she would never tell him. Why help him haul away all the supplies by the truckload? No way. Jarvis grunted softly. Then he remembered the car crash they had earlier in the city. If only he had driven slower back then. At least they would still have a car now. He narrowed his eyes and thought hard. There seemed to be a factory in the city. There should be cargo trucks there. Jarvis stood up. He felt much warmer now and urged Matthew to get moving. "Wait!" Matthew shouted. "I'm not done packing yet!"Jarvis leaned over and took a look. "That's enough. Let's go." Matthew's eyes went wide. "How is that enough? I barely packed anything!" Jarvis frowned. "You already filled two large backpacks. That's enough food for more than a month." Matthew protested, "There's so much stuff here. How can we take only one month's worth?" Jarvis lost his patience. "Move it! One bag each. We can't carry more than that." Matthew wanted to argue again, but Jarvis raised the saber in his hand. Matthew swallowed his words at once. He fell silent, though his chest rose and fell fast with anger. It felt like finding a pile of gold bars by the roadside, only for your partner to say they were too heavy and refuse to let you take them all. He was furious inside. Grinding his teeth, he snapped, "Then maybe you should just—" Before he could finish breaking ties, Jarvis asked coldly, "So you want to ditch me and stay here alone?" Matthew opened his mouth, but before he could answer, Selene grew nervous in the distance. Dude, don't stay here! You are not welcome at all! Matthew really did want to stay. He was sick of Jarvis's stubborn, bossy ways. But when he saw the saber, the words stuck in his throat. His legs went weak. He shook his head. "I'll go with you. We're best friends, right?" Jarvis's dark expression cleared at once. His tone softened. "If you want, you can take a bit more." However, he still warned Matthew, "If it slows us down, you drop it right away."Carrying too much would make traveling impossible. Matthew muttered, "Got it." Then, he turned back to packing. He couldn't help whispering to himself, "Pathetic. I get scared every time I argue with someone."
