Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
Just hearing Anthony's name, Selina felt a rush of mixed emotions. Even though she knew he had been under the control of the curse, the things he had done still broke her heart. That cruel and hateful look on his face was seared into her mind. She knew she would never be able to forget it. It took her a long time to speak again. "I don't think that couple will kill Anthony. Let's just part ways with him here." Guinevere nodded, then asked, "Are you sure? We're both back to normal now, so, the curse on him should be gone, too." What she meant was that there was still a chance things could go back to how they were. But Selina looked at her and said, "He still hasn't come to find us." It had been well over an hour since the shooting and explosions ended. Anthony knew perfectly well they had been locked in the basement, but he still hadn't come. Either he was already dead, or the curse hadn't been lifted. No matter which it was, she didn't want to go looking for him anymore. She'd already cried herself out over his "death," so she might as well treat it as a real goodbye. She pulled Guinevere up. "Let's go back to Rastopia. If we're meant to see him again, we will. If not, it's better not to dwell on it." Guinevere sighed. "You're really good at letting go." She said that, but in her heart, she understood—after actually facing old age and death, love seemed a lot less important. Selina and Guinevere left Greendale that very night, while Selene went to the warehouse alone to check on the supplies. Meanwhile, Jarvis and Matthew were still running around aimlessly, lost as ever.No matter what tracking tricks they tried, or how carefully they studied the footprints in the snow, nothing gave them any clue about their enemies' whereabouts. Jarvis was stubborn enough to keep going, but Matthew finally had enough. He plopped down and refused to take another step. Jarvis had been running for days and was completely exhausted. On top of that, the flashlight was finally dead, so they couldn't see a thing in the pitch-black snow. They had no choice but to give up for now. The two of them felt their way back the way they came, ending up in the same alley. They decided to head to the warehouse, get something to eat, and make some hot water to warm up. They'd start looking again at dawn. Selene was still in the warehouse, grinning at the supplies. But the moment she saw the two men return, her smile froze. She had thought there was enough food left for her to keep all of it. But clearly, that wasn't going to happen. She knew her limits. She never thought she could take on two grown men—especially since the thin one had already shown a bloody knife. Who knew how many people he'd killed? Selene cleared her throat and gave them a sheepish grin. "Hey, you guys are back again? It's freezing outside. Let me make you some hot water." Jarvis nodded. "Thanks! You're a good person." Selene hurried off to make the water. Jarvis, for his part, had no interest in fighting over the supplies. He and Matthew were just too tired. After a little hot water and some food, they crashed and fell asleep right there. When Selene saw they had no plans to bully her, she relaxed. She went upstairs, found a corner, and went to sleep herself.A few hours later, while everyone was sleeping, Natalie, Cassian, and the three little ones suddenly showed up in the tunnel under a nearby two-story house. They had been fast asleep in the storage space, but the sudden drop in temperature woke them up right away. They'd been booted out of the storage space. Natalie got to her feet and glanced at the watch on Cassian's wrist. One minute to midnight. When she'd gone in, she'd checked the time—it had been exactly four o'clock. Adding up the time she'd used before, plus the extra time the three little ones had used by entering the space early, it worked out perfectly—the storage space usage time had just upgraded to eight hours. She said excitedly, "I didn't expect the lady boss's stash to be this effective. The upgrade jumped by two hours!" Cassian smiled. "You almost missed it." Natalie nodded. He was right—if she had gone in even a little later, or if the upgrade had gone beyond eight hours, then at midnight she wouldn't have been kicked out. Instead, she would have used up the next day's quota. That would have meant she couldn't have tested it. But honestly, she would've preferred not to know if it meant more time in the space. If she could stay in the storage space twenty-four hours a day, she'd never have to worry about disasters or the apocalypse again. Still, she was happy with what she had. Eight hours! She only ever slept seven or eight hours a night, so now she could get a full night's sleep inside the space. As Natalie climbed out of the tunnel, she smiled at Cassian."This is great. I thought I'd only get an extra hour." After all, the space had been upgrading so slowly. Even with all those emeralds, it hardly made a difference.
