Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
He flopped onto the couch in a rage, gasping for breath, his chest heaving as he tried to calm down. Then, all of a sudden, he sat up as if he'd remembered something crucial. "Olivia Solace!" He spat out the name through gritted teeth. He'd been so busy looking for food, he almost forgot about that woman! If she hadn't barged in and stalled him, he would've broken through the wall, handled Natalie, and avoided this whole mess. Now, he finally felt like he had someone to blame for all this. It's Olivia's fault! Everything is her fault! He clenched his fists, a cold glint flashing in his eyes. He jumped to his feet and stormed out, heading upstairs. He was determined to kill her to get rid of the anger boiling inside him. As he walked, he remembered how Olivia had risked everything to protect Natalie earlier today. He had no idea when they'd gotten so close, but clearly, they had a good relationship. Natalie had probably even shared supplies with her. That thought made Braxton's strides even more determined. If he couldn't rob Natalie, he'd just rob Olivia instead. After he made up his mind, he headed up the stairs. If he took care of Olivia, he could let off steam and grab some supplies at the same time. He walked up to Unit 1301 and immediately started pounding on the door. "Olivia! Open up right now!" Braxton's voice thundered through the entire hallway as he slammed his fist on the door.Next door in Unit 1302, Owen and Elena were about to go to bed when they heard the noise in the hallway. Elena was startled, thinking someone was banging on their door. But when she heard Braxton shouting Olivia's name, she realized he was pounding on Olivia's door across the hall. She clung to Owen's arm. "Owen, someone's banging on the neighbor's door." Owen had heard the noise too. He narrowed his eyes. "That's perfect. Someone else is finally handling her for us. Too bad the last group only stole her stuff instead of killing her. I wasted all that effort for nothing." Owen was the type to always play it safe. He never attacked anyone himself unless he could do it in secret—he preferred to set others up to do his dirty work. He'd had his eye on Olivia ever since that incident with Daniel, but even though she was just a woman, he never had the guts to face her directly—he was always waiting for a chance to ambush her. But Olivia was too careful, so he never got the opportunity. So, whenever he went out scavenging, he'd talk to people and tell them that Unit 1301 had loads of food, hoping someone else would do his dirty work and take care of her. He didn't expect the last group to just rob her and cause her to miscarry, but leave her alive. He'd actually thought Olivia was dead—so it was a shock to see her alive and well. She is definitely one tough woman! Is she made of steel or something? And now, someone else was back to cause her trouble. Judging by the noise, it sounded deadly serious. Owen was pleased. This time, she was finished for sure. He happily pulled Elena closer. "Babe, let's just go to sleep and let them tear each other apart!" ... Inside her apartment, Olivia heard the pounding on her door too. She had just been dozing off and was startled awake by the noise. She patted her pounding heart, grabbed the boning knife from beside the bed, and crept toward the entryway. She peered through the peephole and stared for a long time before finally recognizing the puffy face outside—it was the guy who'd tried to mess with Natalie earlier today. He's still alive? Since Natalie had raided his place for supplies, Olivia thought that he and his cousin had already met their end. She never expected them to still be around. That was unusual for Natalie to let them off the hook, but she must have had her reasons.Olivia tightened her grip on the knife, her mind shuffling through her options. If Natalie hadn't arrived in time earlier in the day, Olivia would've been beaten to death. As a grown man, Braxton had a natural strength advantage over Olivia—especially since she was still weak from her recent miscarriage. She'd only managed to find the courage and strength to fight back in the day because she wanted to protect Natalie. But now, she was even weaker than she'd been in the day. After a day of running around and fighting, she had almost no energy left. And Braxton was nothing like those random looters outside. Those people only cared about food. If they couldn't find any, they'd just move on—there was no personal grudge. But Braxton was different. She'd ruined things for him earlier, and Natalie had beaten him badly. She could tell just by the way he pounded the door—he wanted to rip her apart. Olivia thought about it, then set the knife aside. There was no way she could win a knife fight now—her arm was too sore from overexertion earlier. Luckily, Natalie had given her a nail gun. It didn't require much strength to use. She found the nail gun and nervously aimed it at the door. Outside the unit, Braxton had started kicking the door. He'd been fuming all day, and now he had more than enough rage to fuel him. Even his bleeding shoulder didn't slow him down.
