Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
Arnold chimed in from the side, "Looks like you scored big! Got some good leads? Hook me up!" Natalie glanced toward the truck. "No leads. I looted it." Arnold froze, his mouth twitching. "Looted? You mean ... " Dennis figured his brother had been too forward and made Natalie defensive—he assumed she was just making up an excuse. He quickly explained, "Ms. Ashford, don't mind him. Arnold didn't mean anything by it. We haven't been doing business lately either, just running errands for our employer ... " The implication was that they had no intention of competing for her resources. Natalie realized he'd misunderstood and explained with a smile, "I'm really not doing business. I took down a small gang. These are the supplies we confiscated." Now even Dennis couldn't stay calm. "You took down a gang?" How could this woman say something so outrageous with such a casual expression? He looked between Natalie and the man behind her. "Just the two of you took down a gang?" Who would believe that! Natalie said, "Well, not exactly. We had other partners. We were just in charge of collecting the supplies." Dennis relaxed a bit. That made more sense! How could anyone be that incredible! He asked curiously, "May I ask what organization Ms. Ashford has joined?" Over the past month, with the fog affecting everything, the chaos had gotten severe. Many people had banded together with acquaintances to form gangs, squads, small bases, and various other groups for survival. The Griffith brothers had even been considering whether to pick a powerful organization to join. Natalie was quite capable. If they could join the same organization as her ... But Natalie looked confused for a moment and waved her hand. "No organization. Just three or four friends and neighbors." "Three or four friends?" Arnold couldn't hold back anymore and blurted out, "You're saying three or four of you took down an entire gang?" Dennis was equally incredulous. "How many people were in that gang?" Surely nowadays even groups of eight or ten people called themselves gangs? Natalie thought back. "About four or five hundred people." "What?" Four or five hundred people?! Hearing that answer, Arnold nearly collapsed to the ground. Dennis's face was filled with shock too. Taking on four or five hundred people with just three or four friends ... How the hell was that even possible? She had a rifle, not a damn missile! But the Griffith brothers had dealt with Natalie several times now and knew she wasn't the type to exaggerate or brag. If she said it, it was 90% likely to be true. So they silently took a step back, mentally adding another red flag. Remember this well. Don't mess with this lady! They were just thinking about finding some excuse to leave quickly before they said something wrong and ended up in a conflict with her, when Dennis looked up and found the man behind Natalie—his face completely covered by a gas mask, but his build somehow familiar. "This gentleman is ... "Natalie had just killed Lillian and her family that morning, so she was in quite a good mood and patiently introduced him. "Cassian Holland. My man." Cassian behind her heard that title and his lips curved into a pleased smile beneath his mask. "Cassian ... Holl ... " "Mr. Holland?" The Griffith brothers were completely stunned. Cassian looked at their reaction and asked, "You know me?" The Griffith brothers nodded repeatedly. They relied on the Mervyns for their livelihood. How could they not know the head of a competing company? If Cassian hadn't been wearing a mask the whole time, they would have recognized him earlier. To be precise, they couldn't really say they knew him. It was more that they knew of Cassian. The Griffith brothers stood dazed for a moment, then looked at Natalie again with absolute admiration. They knew for a fact that Cassian never had women around him. Natalie had been living at Maplecourt until recently. How long had she been here before landing this notoriously difficult man? Wait! Arnold suddenly realized something. They'd been speculating all along about who Natalie's boss was. Now it was obvious that the mysterious boss selling water and medicine was Cassian! So this lady had basically gone from employee to the boss's woman! Damn, that's impressive!!Natalie had no idea they'd already imagined an entire apocalypse workplace romance drama. She was still seriously asking about the situation outside. "The earthquake destroyed most of the city. Are your homes still safe?" The Griffith brothers shook their heads. "Our place collapsed too. There's barely any livable shelter left outside now. We've already moved to the official base." Natalie and Cassian exchanged glances. "The official base? "The buildings there weren't affected?" She was still thinking about that small house she'd bought. "Of course they were affected." Arnold looked proud. "But don't forget, Drakorians are the best at fast construction! The government's been super efficient. They already repaired half the living area a few days ago."
