Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog

Chapter 538 The Abandoned Rig

Arnold cautiously approached the driver's side of the big rig and knocked on the door. "Hey buddy, what's going on in there?" No response came from inside. He gripped his gun tighter and knocked twice. "Your truck's blocking us! What the ... " Before he could finish, he suddenly noticed the freight truck appeared to be empty. Arnold stepped back a few paces and peered carefully through the window. Sure enough, no one was inside. "What the hell. This is seriously weird." He cautiously retreated back to his own water tank truck and knocked on the driver's side door. The window rolled down, revealing Dennis as expected. "What's the situation?" Arnold frowned. "There's nobody in the truck." Dennis looked puzzled. "How's that possible? That truck was right in front of us just a minute ago. How could the driver just vanish in such a short time?" "Dennis." Arnold glanced forward, his throat bobbing. "That truck is loaded to the brim with supplies ... " Dennis looked ahead. The truck sat there quietly, its cargo bed packed with an array of goods—food, household items, even medicine. Definitely tempting stuff. Anyone else would've risked their lives to grab those supplies. But he'd done well in business and had plenty of stored provisions, so while he was tempted, he wasn't desperate enough to lose his better judgment. He signaled his brother not to make any moves. "Don't get greedy. Something's clearly off here. This could be a trap. Get back in the truck first." Arnold nodded and started heading around to the passenger side. Figuring the timing was right, Natalie stepped out onto the main road with her rifle and moved toward them. Dennis reacted quickly, shouting, "Who's there?" Arnold also raised his pistol and turned around. Natalie quickly called out, "Arnold, it's me." Hearing the person called out his name, both the Griffith brothers froze and studied the woman across from them. Though she wore a gas mask that concealed her face, that impressively rare figure, the intimidating rifle, and that familiar voice ... Arnold's eyes lit up as he greeted her in surprise. "Ms. Ashford?" Dennis also recognized Natalie. "Ms. Ashford! What a coincidence!" The two realized why that big rig was loaded with so many supplies. If it belonged to Natalie, that made sense. This lady always operated on a grand scale. But Arnold still carefully confirmed, "Ms. Ashford, is that your truck up there? I noticed there was nobody inside ... " Of course Natalie wasn't going to say she'd deliberately gotten out of the truck earlier to hide nearby and aim her gun at them. She calmly explained, "Yeah, it's mine. I just got out to use the bathroom." Arnold breathed a sigh of relief. "That's good. I thought there might be an ambush ahead ... "Then he suddenly thought of something and stared in shock at the man following behind her. This lady brought a guy along to the bathroom? He'd only ever seen besties holding hands to go to the restroom together, never a woman who'd bring a man along. Arnold glanced at them with a knowing look. These two weren't just hiding off to the side to ... He immediately shook his head. What was he thinking? That truck had only been parked there a short while. In such a brief time, how could they possibly get up to anything inappropriate? Meanwhile, Dennis had already gotten out of his truck. Seeing his brother lost in wild speculation, he smacked him upside the head. Then he politely made small talk with Natalie. "Ms. Ashford, what brings you out here?" Natalie glanced at Arnold beside them before answering Dennis, "I live around here." Arnold said in surprise, "Don't you live at Maplecourt?" Natalie replied, "I just moved." Arnold suddenly remembered something and slapped his head. "How could I forget! The buildings at Maplecourt all collapsed during that earthquake!" Natalie's heart skipped a beat. All collapsed? Thank goodness she, Olivia, and Harold had moved out in time, or it would've been dangerous. In her previous life there was no earthquake at this time, so the apartment buildings were naturally fine, but in this life the domino effect from her actions had changed many things. Fortunately, she and Harold had both felt compelled to move away from there. She looked at the water tank truck behind the Griffith brothers and asked, "What brings you guys out here?" Dennis replied, "We're delivering water." Natalie asked, "You're still selling water?" Arnold waved his hand. "We're not selling water anymore! This is a delivery for our old employer." "Old employer?" Arnold explained, "Remember that Tyro Group we mentioned before? They hired us to help transport water." Natalie understood. "Oh. The Mervyns' water." Hearing her mention the Mervyns, Dennis smiled and said, "Since Ms. Ashford lives around here now, you must know Mr. Mervyn and Mr. Theodore." That blonde punk? Natalie shook her head. "I don't know them." Dennis paused for a moment, then smiled and pointed at the big rig to change the subject. "Has Ms. Ashford been out doing business again?"
