Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
Cassian was surprised to see Bruno nearby. "Mr. Reed?" This guy knew how to fight. How did he end up trapped here, too? Natalie followed his gaze and recognized Bruno. Deep forehead, high cheekbones, jutting chin ... even though she'd only met him once, his face was hard to forget. Seeing Natalie and Cassian, Bruno's eyes welled up. The last time he saw them was at the front door. Their pitch-black chicken had wandered into the Jensens' yard, and he and Whitney came out to check ... Back then, Whitney was still alive. The thought made his heart ache. Meanwhile, Lillian and Rosalie, who had been eavesdropping by the door, exchanged a shocked look. What did Iris just say? Natalie?! Mr. Holland?! Rosalie's face turned pale. The person rescuing them outside was actually Natalie?! Lillian's face went dark. "How did they even find this place ... " Rosalie ground her teeth. "The Grayhound Sect losers! They must've lost! And now they've tracked us to this hideout!" Then she cursed Natalie again. "That bitch. Now she's putting on a hero act." Lillian nervously pressed a hand to her chest. She'd hoped Natalie would win, but she imagined the Grayhound Sect being wiped out, leaving this place empty so she could sneak away. She never wanted that brat showing up here! First Lisa, now Natalie. Being caught by her wouldn't be any better. She was sure that coward Jacob had spilled the secret about what happened back then. She just couldn't figure out how Natalie, who should have been at a disadvantage, still managed to win ... If she ran into her mother's killer, she would never let it go. The more Lillian thought about it, the more terrified she felt. She couldn't help but curse. "These losers! Can't even win, and now someone's chasing them to their hideout?! "How did she do it in this thick fog?" When Rosalie realized Natalie wasn't going to get caught and locked up with her in the labor camp, she lost it. "Ahhh! Why?! I'll kill her!!" Lillian jumped and quickly covered Rosalie's mouth. "Shut up. Are you crazy?" Rosalie kept letting out muffled screams through Lillian's hands. Lillian held on for dear life, terrified they'd attract that murderous Natalie. In her panic, she pressed even harder until Rosalie could barely breathe, eyes rolling back. Hearing the noise, Natalie in the hallway frowned. "What's that sound? Like someone strangling a chicken." Iris replied flatly, "People here are tortured and injured. Sometimes they scream when the pain gets too bad." She had spent the whole night listening to these bone-chilling screams. Natalie looked at the pale Iris. "How did you end up here?"Iris's eyes welled with tears. "Those monsters broke into our house in the middle of the night. Mom's dead, Dad was sent to some place called the livestock pens, and I was thrown in here." Talia was dead? Natalie thought of Talia before the apocalypse—surrounded by housekeepers, living in luxury. She sighed. It was hard to believe the Carters had fallen apart so quickly after the heavy fog started. She looked at Iris with pity. "Stay alive. The physical pain is nothing. Just think of it like getting bitten by a dog ... " Iris knew what she meant and explained, "I'm okay. He saved me in time." Natalie followed the direction Iris was pointing and saw Bruno. "How did Mr. Reed end up here too?" She had thought the Grayhound Sect went straight for Villa 1, but apparently, other families in Hillside Villa District had suffered too. Bruno didn't answer her question. Instead, he urgently asked, "Have you seen Whitney?" Natalie took a moment to process, then realized he meant the Jensen girl. "No, I haven't. She wasn't with you?" Bruno shook his head. "She ... passed away." Then he added, "I mean, did you see her body? I was knocked out and woke up here. I have no idea where they took her ... " The Jensen girl is dead too? Natalie frowned. Seeing a stranger die is one thing, but someone she knew? That felt different. Talia and Whitney had never been unkind to her. Talia had even given her mother's triangular bayonet and emerald pendant, and Whitney had spoken up for her mom at the homeowners' meeting.Natalie couldn't bring herself to deliver bad news. "I didn't see Ms. Jensen." She knew Whitney's body wouldn't be in a good place. Even the deputy leader's head was tossed in the first-floor banquet hall. Those bastards clearly had no respect for the dead. Seeing Bruno's haggard look, Natalie felt a pang of sympathy. This bodyguard was loyal. Or maybe he was more than just a bodyguard.
