Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
Lillian's eyes lit up. "That fighting just now ... " She jumped off the bed, excited. "Did someone take out the guards in the hallway?" She rushed to the door and pressed her ear against it. "Sounds like someone's out there. That woman's calling for help!" Rosalie stumbled out of bed, too. "That voice sounds familiar ... Is that Iris?" Seeing her mom about to open the door and run out, Rosalie panicked and stopped her. "What are you doing?!" Lillian said, "Going out to call for help!" Rosalie frowned. "Are you stupid?" Lillian froze. "Huh?" Rosalie said, "If someone's really here to rescue us, we don't need to yell. Once the door's open, we can just follow everyone out. "But if it's not rescuers, everyone in the hall is screwed! Listen, do you hear anyone else running out of their rooms? "Stay put! Wait till they're gone, then we go." Lillian froze. She realized no one else was leaving their rooms. She looked at her daughter, stunned. Was this clever, cautious girl really her stubborn, naive daughter? Lillian smacked her lips softly, feeling bitter and sad. She'd protected her daughter so well before, that she never really grew. But in just a month, she'd changed. You could guess what she'd been through. She and Derek didn't get enough to eat in the livestock pens, but as long as no one dragged them out to be slaughtered, life was bearable. They just had to lie there quietly, like pigs waiting for the butcher. But her daughter had been tormented. Lillian wiped her tears. "Okay, I'll listen." Outside the iron door were Natalie and Cassian, who'd worked their way up from downstairs. "Save them?" "Yeah." Natalie wasn't usually the type to stick her nose in other people's business, but she'd already wiped out the Grayhound Sect. Opening a door was nothing; it's not like she was planning to take these people home and feed them. If she didn't open it, the ones trapped inside would starve to death. Hearing their voices outside, Iris burst into tears of relief. "Thank you! Thank you so much!" "No problem!" Natalie smirked. "Step back! I'm kicking the door!" Iris quickly moved back, pulling Bruno with her. Even lost in grief and rage, Bruno knew these weren't enemies—they were here to help. He stepped back too. Natalie lifted her leg gracefully and kicked hard. The iron door ... Didn't budge. "Uh ... " Natalie glanced at Cassian with an awkward smile. "Guess I didn't use enough strength." "Again!"Another sharp kick, this time with all her strength. Bang! The door still didn't budge. Natalie frowned. What the hell? She'd trained her kicks for years! Back at Maplecourt, she'd kicked down plenty of stainless steel doors without failing once. So why wasn't it working this time? What kind of door did Lisa install? She'd never seen such an ugly, weird door in a hotel. What she didn't know was that the doors for the labor camp and livestock pens were taken from a private base Lisa had raided. It looked like a plain, even ugly, iron door. But the door and lock were made of special materials—not as thick as armored doors, but still tough to break. That's why the Grayhound Sect carried these doors everywhere. As soon as they settled in this hotel, Lisa had the original doors replaced. After all, everyone else in the hotel—Lisa's crew or Godfrey's—was their own people. But the ones in the labor camp and livestock pens weren't. They were enemies. Life-or-death enemies. If the prisoners managed to overpower the guards, grab a gun, and escape, it'd be a disaster. So every time they moved bases, Lisa made sure to install these doors. Seeing Natalie's embarrassment, Cassian calmly covered for her. "Maybe the direction. This door probably pulls open, not pushes. You're strong. Your kicks just jammed it even tighter." Lucky, still sulking over her postponed pork knuckles, whined, "Direction, my ass! She's just weak. I can open it!" Wow, so full of herself! Natalie nudged the dog aside with her foot and ignored her.She turned to Cassian. "I didn't find any keys on Lisa. Probably someone took them to the hillside."
