Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog

Chapter 522 Lucky Can't Understand Them

Natalie glanced at the van parked outside the door and smiled. "You guys hid a car here?" Joe jumped at her sudden appearance, clutching his chest. "What do you want now?" Natalie raised her gun. "I said next time we meet, I wouldn't let you go." Joe froze. That "next time" came way too fast! How was he supposed to grow stronger like this?! Before he could react, a gunshot cracked. He fell, eyes wide. His last thought was, That wicked woman ... No honor at all! Natalie walked over, crouched down, and gently closed his eyes. Cassian and Lucky walked over slowly. Lucky gave a "told-you-so" look and wagged her tail, barking, "Ow, ow, ow!" She knew Natalie wasn't dumb enough to let the enemy go. Cassian stayed calm, like he saw it coming. Natalie stood and looked at Cassian. "You knew I wouldn't let him go?" Cassian nodded. "I know you." Natalie glanced down at the dead kid. "Was it cruel, killing a kid like that?" Cassian raised an eyebrow. In his memory, Natalie had killed plenty of people. She never seemed bothered by it. She never cared if they were old or young before. This was the first time he'd seen even a trace of pity on her face. Natalie bent down, lifted Joe's body, and carried him to the banquet hall, laying him beside his mother. Honestly, even in her past life, she'd killed plenty of troublesome kids. But this boy was different. He was too mature, too sensible, not annoying at all. When he said he wouldn't take revenge, she saw the flicker of determination in his eyes. She knew he'd come for her one day, just like she went after Jacob for her mom. She admired his courage and maturity, but they were on opposite sides. She had to end it. She couldn't risk leaving a threat to herself, Cassian, or Lucky. Natalie looked up at Cassian. "Maybe this was a better ending for him." He took her hand as they walked back toward the grain depot. "What do you mean?" Maybe explaining to him, maybe to herself, Natalie said seriously, "A quick death is better than a painful life." Hearing that, Cassian remembered Joe's "you've got no honor" look and smiled. "If that kid heard you say that, he'd probably yell, ‘Then why don't you die quickly?'" Natalie raised an eyebrow. "I'm different. I'm happy, not suffering at all. And I plan to keep living well!" Cassian chuckled and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. "Come on. Let's do something that makes you happy." Natalie eyed him warily. "What are you up to? Seriously, not the place for that ... " Cassian raised an eyebrow and tapped her head. "What are you thinking?" Natalie covered her forehead. "What are you thinking?" Cassian's eyes lifted slightly. "I meant let's go gather supplies." He paused, then teased, "What? That doesn't make you happy?""I thought you were going to ... " Natalie cleared her throat awkwardly. "Let's go. Get the supplies." Cassian smiled. "Let's go." Behind them, Lucky looked confused. Every time these two got together, she couldn't understand what they were saying. She knew every word they said, but once those words came out of their mouths together, they stopped making sense. And whenever they talked like that, a weird, flirty vibe filled the air ... Natalie glanced back. "Quit daydreaming! Keep up!" Soon, the two humans and the dog were back in the grain depot. The supplies were neatly organized on rows of shelves. Since Lisa had already moved the important stuff to the front earlier, collecting it was easy. The Grayhound Sect really lived up to its reputation. Their storage was packed with food and drinks, just as much as what Natalie had found back at the mountain base. Besides basic grains, dried veggies, snacks, and alcohol, there were lots of cured meats. Natalie stared at the meat for a moment, but didn't put any into the storage space. When Lucky jumped up to sniff it, Cassian stopped her, pinching her ear. "Do you even know what kind of meat that is before eating it?" Lucky smacked her lips, realized what he meant, and backed off. When they were almost done, Natalie noticed a separate shelf in the corner with two name tags—Lisa and Godfrey.
