Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
Cassian sighed. "Just listen to my translation. I can't repeat what she actually said." Curious, Natalie drank some magic spring water and gestured for Lucky to tell it again. So Lucky went through the whole story at Grayhound Sect—how she survived at gunpoint, how she found things to win Lisa over, all of it. The story was full of swearing. Natalie frowned as she listened. "Lucky, you're a girl. Watch your language!" Then she praised her. "But you did great. You adapted and stayed calm under pressure. I taught you well." Lucky lifted her head proudly and rubbed against Natalie. Once the enemies were taken care of and Lucky had finished her story, it was time to collect supplies. This time, Natalie didn't have to hide anything from Cassian. After the two of them cleared out Lisa's room, they headed straight for the grain depot. As soon as they stepped inside, they spotted Lisa's packed suitcase in the corner. Natalie opened it and frowned. "These clothes ... " Cassian said, "They're for a kid." That's when Lucky remembered to tell Natalie—Lisa had a son. Natalie tapped Lucky's head. "You should've said that sooner." She looked around. "Where's the kid hiding?" Inside a big water tank in the corner, Joe was covering his mouth, tears and snot streaming down his face, not daring to make a sound. When he heard the gunshots earlier, his heart pounded. He knew gunfire meant a fight was over. He just didn't know who won. He waited anxiously in the water tank. If his mom had won, she'd come for him soon. Hearing two shots gave him a little hope—two shots meant two people dead, so probably not his mom. But after a while, no one came. As time passed, his hope faded. Then he heard Natalie and Cassian talking, and his heart sank. His mom was dead. Tears welled up in his eyes, and he wanted to cry out so badly, but he covered his mouth tighter, telling himself to stay quiet. He was heartbroken, scared, and helpless. His mom's last words echoed in his head. You have to survive! You have to live! Standing in the water, he trembled all over. He listened closely, ready to duck underwater as soon as someone lifted the lid. Cassian's voice came from outside. "Lisa's suitcase is still here. The kid must be nearby. "Probably in this grain depot. "Lucky, use your nose." A dog? Joe's eyes went wide. There's a dog too? This is bad. He listened even more carefully. The footsteps got closer and closer ... until they stopped right in front of his hiding spot. Oh no.Joe took a deep breath and ducked underwater. A second later, the lid was lifted. Natalie looked down at the murky, still water. She glanced at Lucky. Lucky nodded firmly. Natalie understood. She set the lid aside, crossed her arms, and waited patiently. After a while, a few bubbles rose. Natalie tapped the tank. "Come out! Don't hold your breath. You'll suffocate if you keep it up." A few seconds passed. No movement, just more bubbles. Natalie raised an eyebrow. Stubborn kid. Finally, Joe couldn't hold it any longer. He burst up, clinging to the rim and gasping for air. Seeing him, Natalie had an idea and asked Cassian, "Doesn't he remind you of a martial arts movie hero?" Cassian looked confused. "What?" Natalie shrugged. "You know, the hero who survives when his whole family gets wiped out, hides in some corner, remembers the bad guy's name, face, or a birthmark, and grows up to get revenge and become a legendary expert ... " Joe, still catching his breath, froze. How did she know exactly what he was imagining while hiding underwater? Natalie didn't notice his reaction and kept talking to Cassian. "So, are we the villains here?"Before Cassian answered, she looked at Joe and asked, "Kid, if I spare you, are you planning to come back for revenge someday?" Joe clenched his fist and slowly lifted his chin, water dripping from his hair. "I'll do what Mom said. She told me not to seek revenge." Natalie raised an eyebrow. "Oh? She told you that?" Joe knew this was life or death. He could take down two adults with his current skills, but his mom had died at their hands, so he obviously stood no chance.
