Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
After making sure there wasn't a spy among them, she finally relaxed. Still, she couldn't help sighing when she thought about what happened to the Carters and Whitney. It seemed like in this world after the apocalypse, you had to be super careful. One mistake could cost your life. Kind and gentle girls just didn't have what it took to survive out here. Philbert watched Natalie carefully. He asked quietly, "Any more questions?" "No," Natalie replied. "So ... can I leave now?" Deep down, Philbert knew she probably wouldn't let him go. But even though he was scared to die, he still had to ask. Fighting her wasn't even an option. This woman wasn't normal. No matter how good he was at combat, it was useless against someone who could vanish and reappear like that. Natalie waved her hand and said, "Go." "Huh?" Philbert was stunned. "What? You don't want to leave now?" she asked. His eyes went wide. "Leave? Y-yes! I'm leaving!" He turned and ran as fast as he could. But he didn't make it far. Before he got ten feet, a bullet whizzed from behind and hit him straight in the chest. As Philbert's body hit the ground, Natalie lowered her gun and muttered to herself, "Moving targets make the best practice." By the time Natalie finished with Philbert, Cassian and the others had already handled the rest of the Grayhound Sect's members. The group gathered and started heading toward Villa 1 together. At that point, only the sect's quick-thinking female leader had managed to escape—driving down the Greenhaven Mountain at full speed. Natalie planned to return and get Lucky to take her to the Grayhound Sect's main base for a look. Outside, gunfire had been echoing for two whole days. The people living in the Hillside Villa District were scared and confused since they had no idea what was happening. Even the Mervyns, who knew a bit about the situation, were confused. Celina frowned and said, "What's going on? Didn't the Hollands already wipe out the intruders yesterday? Why are there more of them today?" Theodore stood by the window, but all he could see outside was thick fog. Earlier, there had been a faint fire glow coming from the direction of Villa 1. Now, only the sound of gunshots remained, getting quieter and farther away. Dave tried to guess what was happening. "Judging by the sound, the Hollands are winning again," he said. Theodore gave a short grunt, his face unreadable. No one could tell what he was thinking. Celina let out a long sigh. "Thank goodness the Grayhound Sect didn't come after us. We couldn't fight back with what little we have." The room went quiet for a moment. Then Theodore suddenly said, "I'm going to check what's going on." Celina's eyes widened. "Are you crazy?" Dave frowned. "Why do you even care? What are you gonna do with that tiny pistol of yours—you think you can help them?" Theodore stuffed his hands into his pockets. "Who said I was going to help? I just want to take a look."That made Dave even angrier. "Are you out of your mind? People are getting killed out there. What's there to see?" Celina quickly tried to calm him down. "Yeah, son, listen to us. The Hollands are clearly chasing those intruders and moving farther away. If you go now, you might get caught in the crossfire. If you really want to know what happened, wait until things settle down and then visit Villa 1 like everyone else." But Theodore didn't listen. He said, "That's enough. You two stay here and rest. I'm going to check it out." He grabbed Raven, who had been massaging Celina's shoulders, and pulled her toward the door. Raven yelped, "What?? I don't want to go!" Inside, she was both scared and furious. She still hadn't gotten over yesterday's trauma, and now this guy was acting insane again! Theodore was totally crazy—like someone who ought to be locked up in a psychiatric hospital. If he wanted to risk his life just for fun, fine. But why drag her into it? If she weren't living under someone else's roof with no choice, she wouldn't have stepped a single foot out of the maid's room today. Dave smacked the table and jumped up. "You brat! Stop right there! Can't you hear me?!" Theodore looked back and said, "Know your enemy, win your battles. I have to see what the Hollands are really like." Then he yanked Raven along and headed out. Dave shouted after them, face red and eyes wide, "They're exactly what they are! What more do you need to see?" Raven fought hard but couldn't break free. She turned to Celina for help. But Celina didn't even look at her. Her worried eyes stayed on her son, full of worry. "Theo! Be careful!" Raven bit her lip and turned away. She followed Theodore with slow steps, scared and unwilling. As soon as they stepped out of Mervyn Villa, the thick fog wrapped around them like a blanket. Every muscle in Raven's body tightened. Theodore saw how nervous she was and tried to calm her down. "Relax. You took down a few people yesterday, remember?" That only made things worse. Raven looked around, frightened, feeling like the ghosts of the people she'd beaten were hiding in the fog, staring at her from all directions.
