Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog

Chapter 495 Whitney's Last Breath

This was the attacker's turf. There was no way they'd get a doctor here. Bruno kept his hand pressed firmly over her bleeding wound while frantically looking around. Finally, his gaze locked on Joe. "Joe! Get a doctor! Quick!" From the moment the gun went off, Joe had been frozen in shock. He stared blankly at Whitney on the ground. It wasn't until Bruno called out to him that he finally snapped out of it and burst into tears. "Whitney! Whitney!" "Mom! Get a doctor for Whitney!" Lisa felt too pleased with herself to bother arranging for a doctor to save her. But she was genuinely surprised. Were there really people in this world who would take a bullet for someone else without caring about their own life? She thought that kind of thing only happened in TV shows! The reality was that even couples who'd been through thick and thin together for half their lives would turn on each other for a chance to survive. In this apocalyptic world, she'd even seen people resort to the worst kinds of atrocities just to stay alive. She'd always doubted the kindness Whitney had displayed. But she never expected this woman to actually be ... Lisa didn't know how to describe it. Kind? Naive? Innocent? Seeing his mom not responding, Joe grew frantic. He rushed at her, shouting, "Please save Whitney! Get her a doctor! Hurry!" The gang had doctors, of course. With members constantly getting into fights and battles, injuries were inevitable. When Lisa first established the gang, she'd recruited plenty of medical personnel. But she had no intention of wasting doctors or medicine on Whitney. So she told Philbert to get a doctor while secretly shooting him a look. Philbert understood the hidden message perfectly. He shuffled out slowly. "I'll go get one myself." By this point, Whitney had lost too much blood. Her lips had turned pale, and she was gasping for breath. She felt her life slipping away bit by bit. She grabbed Bruno's hand and apologized again. "I'm ... I'm sorry. I keep dragging you down ... " Bruno desperately pressed down on her wound, shaking his head frantically. "Stop talking!" Whitney smiled weakly. "I have to." She thought if she didn't say it now, there wouldn't be another chance. "I owe you an apology. Back then ... I was shallow. I judged you by your looks. I wasn't ... wasn't good to you ... " Hearing her say this, Bruno immediately thought back to the past. The tough guy actually started crying. "Whitney, don't talk about that. You're going to be okay! I'm going to stay with you until your parents come back." When Whitney heard him mention her parents, her eyes reddened. Then, using her last bit of strength, she pleaded, "Don't worry about me. You need to ... to run! Today's disaster is all my fault ... my fault for being too soft-hearted and too kind ... " Before she could finish, she took her last breath. She slowly closed her eyes. Her hand holding Bruno's slipped away. "Whitney!" Bruno let out a roar. With trembling hands, he confirmed she'd stopped breathing. Tears streamed down his face. "But I love your empathy and your kindness!"You were so good, like you didn't even belong in this world." He touched her face with his blood-covered hand. "The world failed you! Not you." But no matter what he said or did, Whitney would never respond again. She lay there quietly, the red blood on her pure white nightgown spreading like a rose. The small lollipop-shaped hair clip Joe had given her was still pinned to the collar of her nightgown. After the apocalypse hit, Joe had seen so much death. He already knew what it meant when someone died. There would never again be that Whitney with her bright smile who shared candy with him! He ran toward Whitney, sobbing his heart out. Just as he was about to throw himself beside her, Bruno shoved him away. Joe looked up through his tears. He met Bruno's bloodshot eyes. Bruno growled, "Don't touch her!" Lisa called out with displeasure. "Joe! Get back here!" Then she glared at Bruno and ordered her men, "Kill him!" Bruno held Whitney's body tightly. He didn't even spare Lisa a glance, as if he no longer cared about his own life or death. But Joe suddenly shouted, "Nobody touches him!" Lisa frowned. "Joe! You ... " Joe cut his mother off, glaring at her with gritted teeth. His small body trembled with emotion. "I said! Nobody touches him!" With her dying breath, Whitney was still thinking about Bruno's safety. He'd promised Whitney they'd be best friends. A promise shattered when he failed to protect her. Now, her final wish was a debt he had to repay!Lisa looked at her overly agitated son with concern. "Joe, come to me first." Joe didn't move. He just glared at her stubbornly. "If you're going to kill him, I'll be the next one to take the bullet!" Lisa shot up from her seat. "What did you just say?"
