Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
As Lisa spoke, she turned her gaze toward Whitney, her expression twisting into something vicious. "If it weren't for Mr. Olson reaching Greenhaven Mountain first, that kill count would've been mine. "Tell me, shouldn't I be settling the score with you two?" Whitney and Bruno immediately thought back to the endless gunfire they'd heard during the day. So it was Cassian and Natalie who had been taking out the intruders from the Grayhound Sect? That was crazy! They killed over two hundred people? Before Whitney could speak, Bruno jumped in. "I'm the one who said it. This has nothing to do with Whitney. Whatever you want to do, take it out on me!" The moment he took all the blame, Whitney quickly shook her head. "He's just a bodyguard. I'm the one who lives here. I'm the one who let you into the house. I'm the one you got information from. He had nothing to do with it!" Lisa looked at them and let out a cold snort. "Neither of you is getting away." Whitney looked completely baffled. "You're being unreasonable! We never meant you any harm! We took you and your son in out of the kindness of our hearts. We gave you precious food. We let you come with us to scavenge supplies. We even exchanged mementos ... " Mentioning the memento turned out to be a mistake. It only made Lisa angrier. Joe treated that silver bracelet like it was a treasure. He wouldn't stop talking about Whitney. He completely ignored where his loyalties should lie. That infuriated his mother. With a cold expression, she leaned forward. "Fine! Since you're all so kind and have done me so many favors, I'll be generous and let one of you go." Whitney frowned. "What do you mean, let one go?"Lisa spread her hands. "I mean exactly that. Only one gets to leave! "Since you're both so fond of playing the hero and making sacrifices, I'll give you a chance to be heroes. One of you stays behind to pay the price. The other goes free. Consider it payback for taking us in." Whitney glared at her. "This isn't payback. It's revenge!" Lisa didn't bother arguing. "You have three minutes. If you haven't decided by then, I'll just keep both of you here." With that, she leaned back comfortably and fell silent. Bruno didn't hesitate. He shouted at Whitney, "Whitney, you need to go! Now!" Whitney glared at Lisa. She could see the woman was dead set on this. Then she turned to look at the armed guards surrounding them. She quickly realized the two of them had no chance of forcing their way out. She bit her lip and turned to Bruno. "Bruno, this is all my fault! If I'd just listened to your warnings back then, we wouldn't be in this mess. You go! Don't worry about me!" Bruno knew that Lisa was just playing with them. She could turn on them again at any moment. In their current situation, he had no way to fight back. He urged her, "Whitney, go! Just listen to me!" Whitney's expression was firm. "No, you go." At that moment, a familiar voice suddenly rang out from outside the hall. "Whitney?" "Whitney, it really is you!" Everyone turned to look. They saw Joe in his pajamas running over with a delighted expression. Whitney's scream had drawn him downstairs. The hotel wasn't that big. He'd been upstairs getting ready for bed when he heard shouting. The voice sounded oddly familiar. He wasn't sure, but he thought it sounded like Whitney's voice. So he rushed downstairs to check, and sure enough, there was Whitney. He ran toward her excitedly, but it wasn't until he got close that he noticed she was tied up. He frowned at Lisa. "Mom, what are you doing? Why is Whitney tied up?" Lisa cursed under her breath, though her face remained calm. "This doesn't concern you. Go back to bed!" Joe said nothing and didn't move. He just stood there, staring at his mother. Lisa sighed helplessly. "Joe, come here." Joe still stood his ground. Lisa's brow furrowed, her tone turning stern. "Joe Barnett!" Hearing his mother use his full name, Joe hesitated for a moment before reluctantly walking toward her. As he walked forward, he kept turning back to glance at Whitney. Seeing Joe suddenly appear and greet her so warmly, Whitney's feelings were complicated. The kid must have known that he and his mother had come to her house to deceive her. But Joe was still young. Maybe he couldn't tell right from wrong yet. He was just following his mother's lead. Even now, with her and Bruno tied up and helpless, he still seemed like he wanted to be close to her. For a moment, Whitney didn't know how to treat the child. She turned her head away, refusing to look at him.
