Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog

Chapter 485 Worth More Than Gold

"Natalie," Lisa repeated the name and made sure to remember it. She asked again, "So, just the two of them?" Emerson nodded. "Yeah. The Hollands and the Mervyns are the two most famous families in Hillside Villa District. Everyone there knows it. Villa 1 has only Mr. Holland. "A while back, his fiancée moved into the Hillside Villa District. I remember her house collapsed during the earthquake, so she must be living at Villa 1 now." Lisa thought it over. Whitney and Bruno hadn't lied to her. There really were just two people in Villa 1. But could only two people really have caused such heavy damage to Godfrey's group? She pressed on. "Do they have any close neighbors?" Emerson quickly remembered that on the day Natalie moved in, two people wearing police body armor had gone with her. He answered truthfully, "Natalie has two friends living there with her. And Mr. Holland's assistant moved his family into Hillside Villa District after the disaster, too." He paused, then added, "Natalie's dad, stepmother, and stepsister also live in Hillside Villa District. Other than that, I don't think there's anyone else connected to them." Lisa narrowed her eyes. "Does Mr. Holland have a gun?" Before Emerson could speak, a woman lying on the ground not far away suddenly shouted, "He does! He has a gun!" Her sudden outburst startled everyone, and all eyes turned to her. "Ask me instead! I know everything! I know more than he does!" She gave a creepy little laugh. "Just give me some real food right now, and I'll tell you everything." Lisa rubbed her fingers together. She had almost forgotten that this "livestock pen woman" had been yelling earlier that she used to be a rich wife. From the sound of it, this woman must have been from Hillside Villa District, too. Lisa tilted her head with interest. "If you want real food, you'd better make sure what you say is worth something." The woman pressed her lips tight. "You give me food first. Then I'll talk." She flinched like she expected a beating and rushed to explain, "I've been starving for so long! Give me a little food, and I'll have the strength to tell you everything. It's not like you can't spare it ... " Lisa leaned back in her chair, lounging comfortably. "How do I know you're not just bluffing to get free food?" The woman shouted, "Why would I not know? I'm Natalie's stepmother!" She lifted her chin, her filthy face full of pride. It was Lillian. After Lillian left Hillside Villa District with Derek and Rosalie, they moved into a house Derek had built in the mountains. During the past few years of disasters, Derek had been hiding out in Greenhaven Mountain, surviving only because Lillian secretly kept helping him. Back then, Lillian had hooked up with him, faked a paternity test, and tricked him into thinking Rosalie was his child. It was just a scheme to buy him off and make sure he worked for her and Rosalie without question. Even now, the only reason she had supported him during the chaos was because she didn't trust Jacob. She wanted a backup plan for herself. But she hadn't expected Derek to actually have feelings for her. He hadn't just done her dirty work all these years—he even rushed to protect her whenever danger struck. They had left Hillside Villa District to avoid Natalie, who they thought was too dangerous. But they ran into something even worse. Not long after moving into the mountain house, they were discovered by the Grayhound Sect, who were raiding every base, gang, and villa they could find. Derek's fists weren't enough against so many men. The three of them were captured and dragged here, and their lives had been miserable ever since. Lillian was so hungry every day that even the stink of someone's sweaty feet made her think of juicy roast pork knuckles. And death was always close. She soon realized this place was called the "livestock pens." Everyone here was just waiting to be eaten. She had thought about escaping, but the guards were too strict. If you got caught, you'd be beaten half to death. If you died, you'd be cooked. So she had suffered here like an animal, watching people being dragged out one by one to be killed, waiting for her turn for death to die. If Derek hadn't been shielding her all this time, she would already be dead. When she was brought out today, she thought it was finally the end. But instead, she got to see this show. Lillian felt a dark thrill. She could use Natalie's name to gain something for herself. Maybe not much, but even one good meal was worth more than gold when you were starving. When Lisa heard the dirty, ragged woman claim to be Natalie's stepmother, her interest lit up immediately. Now that was interesting. She looked Lillian up and down. Even though the woman was filthy and stinking, Lisa could still see the faint outline of her high nose and broad forehead. She must have been good-looking once.
