Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
Jacob made a weak sound. "Mom ... " Hearing him, Lillian finally confirmed it. "Honey? Is that truly you?" Rosalie dashed over to help him up. "Dad, what happened to you—ugh!" The moment she touched Jacob, the stench hit her so hard that she gagged and vomited right onto the back of his head. Her vomit slid down his head and cheek, mixing with the grime already on his face. The odor got even worse. Jacob cried out in disgust. Lillian turned away and dry-heaved. Only Maisie ignored how filthy he looked and rushed to lift him. But as soon as she had him halfway up, Jacob screamed in pain. Maisie was frantic and heartbroken. "What happened?! Lillian, Rosalie, stop puking and come help! His leg is busted—he can't stand up!" It took all three women a lot of effort to get Jacob inside and prop him up against the wall. Maisie checked his wounds while crying. "There's a big chunk missing from his right calf. His knee is even worse—the bone is showing! Thank God the main artery wasn't hit, or else ... " Lillian sighed quietly. Even if the artery was fine, his kneecap was smashed. His right leg was probably done for. Rosalie sobbed so hard that she could hardly breathe. "Dad, how did this happen? Was Natalie behind it?" While tearing her shirt to bandage him, Maisie ripped Lillian's skirt to wipe the gunk off Jacob's face. When Rosalie asked, Maisie flew into a rage. "That crazy girl did this? She's lost it!" She stormed off, ready to go after Natalie. Sweating from the pain, Jacob grabbed her hand. "Mom, it wasn't Natalie." Maisie froze. "Then who did this to you?" He hesitated. "It was ... " He was already hurt anyway. By the time he woke up, the vicious dog that bit him was long gone. Even if he found the dog, what could he do? Letting his 70-year-old mother fight it for revenge? They couldn't risk another family getting hurt. He gritted his teeth and said, "Right now, we need to get our supplies back so I can eat and clean these wounds." Lillian asked quickly, "So what did Natalie say? Will she give our stuff back?" Jacob stared at her coldly and kept quiet. He'd thought it through. If someone in the family betrayed them, it couldn't be his mother. She nearly fainted when the supplies went missing; she wouldn't steal from her son. As for Rosalie? That was also impossible. She relied on the family and on him. Stealing wouldn't help her. That left only Lillian. His mother and daughter wouldn't run off, but his wife might. Lillian had other men in her life. She had an ex-husband and plenty of admirers, even when she was secretly with Jacob. Maybe she'd hooked up with someone else and planned to run off with their supplies. Jacob glared at Lillian, anger written all over his face. She got nervous under his stare. "Honey, why are you looking at me like this?" He gritted his teeth. "Still playing dumb? Natalie and Mr. Holland never touched our stuff!" Lillian was stunned. "How can that be? If not them, then who?" She thought for a moment and asked, "What exactly did Natalie say? Tell me." But Jacob just glared and refused to answer. Lillian's eyes widened. "Honey, you're not suspecting me, are you?!" "Who else could it be? No outsider could get in without breaking the lock! Someone inside let them in!" After Natalie got kicked out, they changed the locks. Besides them, no one else could open the door. Maisie looked at Lillian, her face dark. Even Rosalie started to doubt her mother. Was that what Mom meant when she said Dad was getting old and unreliable? Seeing everyone suspect her, Lillian felt helpless. She protested, "I'm not crazy. Why would I steal from my family and starve myself?" Jacob snorted. "Who knows? Maybe you're planning to run off with some other guy." At the mention of another man, Lillian looked a bit guilty and turned away. But Jacob didn't notice. Holding his stomach where Natalie had kicked him, he continued, "Maybe you even brought that dog here to hurt me!" "A dog?!" Maisie exploded. "You vixen! I knew you were trouble! Today, you're going to pay!"
