Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog

Chapter 373 Scarlett's Jewelry

She only left behind her own things and her mother's in the supply area; everything belonging to Lillian and Rosalie had gone straight into the trash pile. After packing up the clothes, Natalie moved on to the jewelry section. As she'd guessed, her mom's precious jewelry was still there. She was about to sweep it all into her storage space when she noticed a particular necklace. Natalie stared at it for a moment, her vision suddenly blurring. It was the commemorative necklace her mom had made the year she was born. The necklace was a simple platinum chain, but the four-leaf clover pendant was special—inside were a lock of her baby hair and her mother's breast milk. It held a mother's joy and her love for her child. But now her mom was gone. To the rest of the world, Scarlett had only been gone for a little over two years, but for Natalie, her mother had already been gone for six. She had gotten past the worst of her grief. Over these six years, she'd grown up. She'd learned to stand on her own without her mom. But as soon as she saw the necklace, she couldn't hold back her tears. Losing family wasn't like a sudden storm. It was more like a slow, lingering drizzle that never seemed to end. Right then, she found herself thinking maybe it was a good thing Jacob had thrown her out. Otherwise, how was she supposed to live in a house filled with memories of her mom and grandparents, when they were all gone? With trembling hands, Natalie put the necklace around her neck as if it were the most precious thing in the world. The breast milk had long since lost its warmth, but she could still feel its heat on her skin. It felt just like her mother had come back to her side. She stood still for a while, then wiped her tears and got back to work. Almost all the jewelry in the section had been her mother's. The disasters happened so fast that Lillian and Rosalie hadn't had time to collect anything nice for themselves. Neither of them could tell which pieces were really valuable, so they'd just kept everything. That included the four-leaf clover necklace. They probably thought it was a limited-edition designer piece, so they didn't throw it out. She felt lucky. If they'd known what it was, they would've thrown it out long ago. Natalie gently touched the necklace at her throat, then swept up every piece of jewelry she could see into her storage space. She even found a few pieces of emerald jewelry. She had never really liked emeralds. They always seemed too mature for her taste, so she'd barely bought any before. Lillian and Rosalie, on the other hand, seemed to love them. Most of their new jewelry was emerald. Counting her mom's old pieces, there were 12 emerald items in total. Three bangles, two bracelets, a ring, three pendants, two pairs of earrings, and one more pendant. Natalie happily took them all. The best of the bunch was an emerald pendant her mother had left behind. The carving was exquisite and the color was rich—it must have been worth millions. She remembered seeing a fake necklace at the Boltons that looked about the same, but this one was of much better quality. In the emerald business, people always said, "First look at the color, then the clarity." Stones with a deep, vibrant color like this always sold for more. And this one was definitely real. As soon as it went into her storage space, it was absorbed right away. Besides the emerald pendant, the rest of the jewelry was high quality, too. Natalie snorted. Jacob sure was generous with Lillian and her daughter. But now, all of it belonged to her. After she had gathered everything, the emerald bracelet on her wrist seemed to shine with richer color and greater clarity. She figured her time in the storage space had gone up quite a bit. Natalie smiled satisfiyingly and left the now-empty closet. She spent another two hours searching every corner of the villa before finally heading out. Just as she was about to go home, she stopped and decided to check out the other houses. The next morning, screams came from the Ashford family villa. Maisie was the first to shout. She'd been sleeping soundly in the main bedroom on the top floor, but when she woke up, she somehow found herself in the first-floor guest room—the one she hated the most. She'd always hated that room. In her mind, the floor one slept on said everything about one's status. Otherwise, why else would her in-laws live on the top floor and put the maids down in the basement? Every time she came to town, her clueless daughter-in-law, Scarlett, would stick her in that first-floor guest room, while she enjoyed the luxury suite on the second floor herself. She had no respect for elders at all! Even her in-laws kept the grand bedroom on the third floor to themselves and never once offered it to her. They'd just let her sleep in the guest room and pretend not to notice. It was clear they were mocking her, treating her like some country nobody. Maisie had held a grudge about it for years. So after Scarlett died, she made sure to claim the main bedroom on the third floor. She was the mother of the man of the house—of course she should have the most prestigious room! But ... how did she end up back on the first floor again? Once Maisie realized she wasn't dreaming, she immediately assumed Lillian was out for revenge. She jumped out of bed, ready to go yell at someone—only to find the guest room completely empty. There wasn't even a bed left.
