Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
So naturally, she didn't think much of Bruno in the beginning. But people only truly revealed their true colors when things got tough. After the disaster, all the Jensens' servants and bodyguards ran off. Some even tried to steal Whitney's food when they saw she was alone. A couple of them even tried things that were much worse. If Bruno hadn't stuck by her side and protected her, there was no way she would've made it this far. There wasn't much food left in the house, and she couldn't access her money. The only reason she survived was because Bruno refused to leave her and kept finding supplies for her. Whitney felt both grateful and ashamed. She never should have judged him by his looks. Bruno might not be handsome, but he was the most upright and kindhearted person she'd ever met. Bruno noticed Whitney still had tears on her face. Instinctively, he wanted to wipe them away for her, but he stopped himself just before touching her. "Whitney, let's head inside." Whitney nodded, and as she walked in, she asked, "Do you think those two are good people or bad people?" Bruno paused. She always saw things in black and white since her sheltered life had made her a bit too idealistic. He chose his words carefully. "Whitney, things in the world aren't always black or white. To the Boltons, they're the villains. To others, they might be the heroes. For us, they're just people we should keep our distance from." Whitney frowned. "But killing isn't right." Bruno said with a sigh, "It's not up to us to decide what's right or wrong. Just let it go." On the other side, Natalie and Cassian headed home with Lucky on a leash and Cash in their arms. Since there was no one around, Natalie couldn't help but ask, "You said earlier that someone was spreading rumors. Who was it, and what did they say? And how does it involve my mom?" Cassian thought for a moment, then answered honestly. "It was your dad." When Jacob's name came up, Natalie was quiet for a second before she asked again, "He was the one spreading rumors? What does that have to do with my mom?" On their way home, Cassian told her everything that had happened. After hearing it all, Natalie let out a cold laugh. "There's no doubt that Lillian and her bunch are behind that anonymous notice." After living through her last life, Natalie knew exactly what that family was like. Besides Lillian and Rosalie, nobody else would be that desperate to get her out of the picture. Jacob had always been cold and heartless, letting his mistress and illegitimate daughter trample on her. She had long since given up on him. But she wasn't going to let them drag her mother's name through the mud. She honestly wished she didn't share any blood ties with Jacob. At least then, all the neglect and pain she suffered would make sense. But she knew what her mom was like. Scarlett was pure and innocent when it came to love. She had never been close to any man except Jacob. Natalie had seen her own baby photos and compared them to Jacob's childhood photos — they looked exactly the same.Even though she looked more and more like Scarlett as she grew, it didn't change the fact that she was Jacob's biological daughter. When Mom died of that heart attack, he cried like a baby. But now, he just stands by and lets Lillian smear her name? It hasn't even been that long. Natalie clenched her fists. She used to be hurt by Jacob's coldness and indifference, and how he let her suffer. But out of respect for the 20 years they had as father and daughter, she had planned to just go her own way and leave him behind. But now, they'd crossed a line by dragging her mother into it. The most ridiculous part was that after finding out about her and Cassian, Jacob suddenly wanted to be her father again. She used to think Jacob was the greatest dad in the world, but now she realized what a lowlife he really was. It was disgusting. Natalie let out a cold snort. She was determined to make them pay, so they'd finally learn their lesson. Cassian felt her mood shifted, so he took her hand to comfort her. "Don't be sad. I'm here for you. If you want to get back at them, I'll help you." Natalie shook her head. "I can handle them myself." Cassian squeezed her hand but didn't say anything else. They soon made it back to Building 15, where Harold and the others were still waiting for them. Natalie wasn't in the mood to eat with everyone. After a brief chat, she headed home. As soon as she walked in, she noticed a fancy new massage chair by the living room couch. She turned to Cassian. "I was so busy looking for Cash just now that I forgot to ask — did you bring this over?" Cassian nodded. "You've been so tired these days, I thought you could use something to help you relax." Natalie asked, "This was the urgent thing you had to get?" Cassian replied, "Yeah." Natalie said, "Was that really so urgent?" Cassian smiled. "Anything that has to do with you is urgent. You're always my top priority." Natalie stared at him for a second, then stood on tiptoe and kissed his cheek. She had a massage chair in her storage space too, but what really touched her wasn't the chair — it was the care behind his gesture. Cassian was caught off guard. "If I'd known a massage chair could earn me a kiss, I would've brought it over sooner."
