Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
Jacob craned his neck to look across the way. "Huh? That figure looks familiar." Lillian replied, "That must be the new neighbor. Too bad she passed by so fast. I didn't get a clear look at her face ... " The Bolton Residence was now empty, except for one creepy body left inside. The two of them pulled the curtains shut again and went back to bed. Jacob leaned against the headboard, deep in thought. "Lillian, didn't that figure seem a little familiar to you?" She shook her head. "I didn't even see her clearly before she went inside." Then she added, "I heard Mrs. Bolton say she's a single woman living alone. With how chaotic things are out there, if she managed to stay alive on her own and even moved into the hillside villas, then she's obviously tough." Jacob frowned. "Cut the nonsense! If she can chase someone down and kill them in their own house, do you really think I can't tell she's tough?" He let out a sigh. "The Boltons are done for." Lillian cursed silently. Nonsense? Jacob never respected her. He always had to act like the man of the house, snapping back at her no matter what she said. She calmed herself, then leaned against him gently. "Don't worry. Their grudge has nothing to do with us. It won't affect us." Jacob furrowed his brow and reminded her, "Tell Rosalie to be careful when she goes over tomorrow. Make sure she doesn't offend that woman." Lillian nodded. "Got it. I know what to do." Jacob hesitated, then said, "Actually ... maybe we should forget it. Don't let Rosalie go. She's too clumsy. What if she messes it up?"Lillian sat up and looked at him, disagreeing. "She'll be fine if she's careful. We have to go. We're neighbors now. Getting a read on her will help us sleep better at night." She was even hoping Rosalie could become friends with that girl. From what happened today, it was clear to Lillian that this new neighbor was going to dominate the entire neighborhood. If they could build a good relationship with her, then she and Rosalie could also act freely in the future. Lillian had clawed her way up from the bottom. She wasn't like those wealthy women born into privilege and arrogance. For her, climbing higher in society was all that mattered. Class, dignity, pride—none of that meant anything to her. What mattered was flattering the right people and trading that for real benefits. Not just in Ashford Villa. The gunshots that echoed through the neighborhood had every household whispering tonight. The entire Hillside Villa District was on edge. They were used to peaceful days, but this new resident was like a huge rock dropped into a calm pond, sending ripples everywhere. Inside the service room of Mervyn Villa, Raven had jumped at the sound of gunfire. Mervyn Villa was farther from the Bolton Residence, and the walls were thick. So even though the shots were loud, the sound inside was muffled. Still, Raven's whole body tensed up. She thought this place would be safer. Yet in just one day, she had already heard four rounds of gunfire. In the end, nowhere was truly safe in the apocalypse. She hung up Celina's towel to dry and fell into thought.Mervyn Villa was a good place. Ordinary survivors struggled to even drink dirty water, while this house still had laundry, mopped floors, normal routines, and even a maid and security guards. Staying here wasn't as good as her old life before, but at least it was stable. At least she wouldn't starve. Raven had crossed over from another world. The worst part? Other people got sent back to ancient times as rich young ladies, living easy lives. She got dropped into a parallel world—right in the middle of the apocalypse. In her original world, everything was fine. No natural disasters, the country was safe, and life was thriving. She had just passed the entrance tests for her dream company. She had a stable job waiting. A good life was about to begin. But on her way to report for her first day, a black sedan speeding through a red light slammed into her. The car had been driven by some lunatic taking revenge on society. Raven, who had been walking obediently on the crosswalk, was thrown high into the air. Her body was shattered into pieces. In despair, she closed her eyes for the last time. When she opened them again, she was standing on a wasteland in the middle of the apocalypse. The good news was that her injuries were gone. The bad news? So was her good job. The worst news? This was the end of the world, and she didn't even have food to eat. Raven wanted to cry. She had no parents. She'd been raised by her grandma, but after her grandma died, she'd been alone. Finally, she had landed a government job with a steady paycheck. Now, even that was gone. After coming here, she struggled to survive. She couldn't find food, and whenever she tried to fight for it, she lost. She thought she would become the fastest death ever for someone who crossed into another world—until she saw the Mervyn family's hiring notice.
