Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
Natalie quickly nudged Olivia to look. "Lottie, what's wrong?" Olivia turned just in time to catch the look before Lottie could hide it. Jealousy, hate, disgust ... None of that should show up on a kid's face. A shiver went down Olivia's back. Hearing Natalie's question, Lottie snapped out of it, forcing a sweet smile. "Nothing! I was just thinking Cass treats Natalie truly well." Natalie raised an eyebrow. "Not gonna argue there." Lottie's eyes flicked around, then she suddenly pointed at the necklace around Natalie's neck. "But that necklace makes you look old." Natalie's eyebrow shot up. Going straight for age jokes, huh? She didn't answer and just looked at Lottie with a meaningful smile. Lottie got uneasy. She sneaked a look at Cassian and realized he looked even more irritated than Natalie. Awkwardly, she turned to Olivia, waiting for her to say, "Kids don't know any better." But Olivia was angrier than anyone else. "How could you say something like that?!" Lottie froze. After a moment, her face crumpled as she burst into tears with a pout. Her head and shoulders trembled as she cried, looking completely pitiful. But Natalie and Cassian weren't moved at all. Even Olivia, who normally doted on Lottie, looked fed up."I'm talking to you! Why are you crying?" Lottie blinked at Olivia in disbelief. "Mom ... " What's going on? Why isn't this working? Olivia didn't budge. "Say sorry to Natalie." Lottie stared, then turned slowly to Natalie. "I'm sorry, Natalie." Olivia didn't let it slide. "Sorry for what?" Lottie hadn't expected Olivia to push further. Shock flickered in her eyes before she muttered, looking wronged, "I shouldn't have been so rude." Natalie finally jumped in. "Olivia, it's not that serious. Why come down so hard on her?" Lottie bit her lip, shooting Natalie a sharp look. Oh, now you play the nice one? Weren't you just quiet a second ago? She just couldn't figure it out. Why was Olivia, usually so kind, suddenly snapping at her? Surely it wasn't just about defending a friend. Inside, Lottie sneered. How could friendship between friends be reliable? Olivia was probably jealous after seeing Natalie with a gorgeous guy and getting expensive gifts. Lottie thought she had found the truth. She must be upset and taking it out on me! Thinking that, Lottie relaxed. "Mom, don't be angry. I won't say that again." But Olivia still looked troubled. In her mind, she kept replaying the way Lottie had glared at Natalie with pure hate. The memory made her shiver. She looked at the girl like she was a bomb ready to go off. "Nat, we've been here long enough. I'm taking her home." Natalie could tell Olivia was on guard now and didn't argue. She just nodded. "Okay." Lottie, still stung from being scolded, stayed quiet while slipping on her shoes. When Lottie wasn't looking, Natalie leaned close to Olivia. "Got your gun on you?" Olivia glanced at her waist. "Always." Natalie reminded her meaningfully, "Better be careful. If a kid gets hold of it, she might set it off." Olivia nodded. "Don't worry." Once the two left, Cassian pulled Natalie into his arms. She looked up at him. "What is it?" He smirked. "I made a big sacrifice today. How are you gonna pay me back?" Natalie raised a brow. "Pay you back? Not happening." Before he could argue, she stood on tiptoe and planted a quick kiss on his cheek. "But you do get a reward." He chuckled. "You're smooth." She grinned. "Right back at you." With the others gone, they slipped right back into being lovey-dovey. Back at Unit 1401, Lottie carefully studied Olivia's expression."Mom, are you still mad?" Olivia's face was unreadable. She just shook her head without saying a word. Lottie let out a relieved sigh. "That's good." With her most innocent face, she pleaded, "I'll never make you upset again. Please don't leave me." Lottie sounded so helpless and desperate. Normally, Olivia would've wrapped her in a hug and sworn she'd never leave her. But this time, she only stared at Lottie, her mind spinning. She'd always thought Lottie looked cute. But now, she realized her face didn't look like a child's at all. At first, she thought it was just because Lottie was too skinny. But even after filling out, her cheeks stayed sunken. Lottie noticed the stare and got uneasy. "Mom, what's wrong?"
