Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog

Chapter 251 Seal the Deal

Olivia grew tense the moment she heard the words. "What's wrong with your body?" She quickly grabbed Natalie's wrist and checked her pulse. Natalie waved it off. "It's nothing serious. I just feel overheated." Olivia kept her fingers on Natalie's wrist, then nodded. "Yeah, you are a little overheated. Nothing major—it's easy to take care of." Natalie finally relaxed. She cared a lot about her health. But Olivia gave her a meaningful look. "Nat, this sickness is because of Mr. Holland, isn't it?" Natalie's cheeks flushed and snapped, "Don't talk nonsense! It's only because the weather's too hot and my body couldn't take it." She quickly gathered her pets and hurried home. Olivia watched her leave and shook her head with a smile. For all the toughness Natalie showed, she was still just a young woman experiencing her first taste of love. Luckily, with Nat's personality, even if she fell in love, she wouldn't let herself get too badly hurt. Olivia was confident about that. Back home, Natalie pulled out her gun and bullets, carried them to Olivia, and then set a daily time for treatment before calling it a night. The next day, she returned to the abandoned factory on the edge of town to trade the second batch of echinacea. Once again, the deal went smoothly. The Griffith brothers looked cheerful, their steps light—the kind of look that people wore when business was good. After loading all the herbs into their truck, Dennis smiled as he said goodbye."Working with you, Ms. Ashford, has been a real pleasure. If you get more supplies, come find us at the usual spot." Natalie nodded. "Got it." Arnold suddenly leaned forward with a grin. "Ms. Ashford, take care of yourself out there. I hope we meet again." It was a simple but heartfelt blessing. In the middle of an apocalypse, no one could be sure if the people saying goodbye today would still be alive tomorrow. Natalie smiled and waved. "Same to you." She waited until their truck disappeared from sight, then quickly pulled the grains into her storage space. Just as she was about to get back into her car, three off-road vehicles came racing in. The first one shot through the factory gates at high speed, with the other two close behind. All their windows were down. Natalie could clearly hear the voices inside. "Stop, stop, stop! This is the place!" "We saw those two guys bring a full truckload of grain here. Must've been dozens of tons!" "Yeah! And now that truck's empty. The grain has to be stashed here!" Natalie quickly realized what was going on. These men were after the grain she had. They must have spotted the Griffith brothers when they made their delivery earlier. The truck only had about 500 pounds of echinacea piled in a thin layer on top. From the outside, it probably looked as if they were driving an empty truck away. What they didn't realize was that, compared to grain, the echinacea they hauled off was far more valuable. Natalie sighed. Just her luck. The three trucks screeched to a stop a short distance before her. Within moments, more than a dozen men jumped out and crowded together. "Where is it? Where's the grain?" "A few dozen tons of grain—that's a fortune!" "Yeah! We'll never have to worry about food again!" The group buzzed with excitement, except for one man, Edwin Annable, who wore his long hair tied back. He watched Natalie with sharp eyes, his whole body tense. "Quiet!" Edwin barked. "Don't you see we're not alone here?" The noisy crowd fell silent at once. Edwin's gaze swept over Natalie, his expression darkening with unmistakable dislike. "You. What are you doing here?" Natalie raised an eyebrow. It was the first time she had ever seen that look in a stranger's eyes. It wasn't curiosity or even anger. It was pure dislike—almost like ... Before she could answer, Edwin smacked the bald man beside him hard. "What are you staring at? Watch your eyes." Natalie caught the bald man's glance—there had been a spark of admiration there. Yup, that was the normal look men gave. The way that man looked at her reminded Natalie of Tiffany—that sharp, jealous look women gave when they saw someone they couldn't stand. The bald man rubbed his head and gave Edwin a sheepish grin. "Babe, I wasn't looking. Just curious, that's all. Heh."He even threw an arm around Edwin's shoulders. This time, Edwin swatted him again, but lighter, almost playfully. Of course! Natalie's lips curved. These two must be a couple. Noticing Natalie was observing them, Edwin quickly shifted to block the bald man from view. He snapped at her, "What are you staring at? You still haven't answered me. What are you doing here?" Natalie widened her eyes innocently. "Me? Just out for a drive." Edwin frowned. "There's nothing out here worth driving around for!" Gasoline is too precious now. Who would waste it just cruising around? This woman is clearly hiding something. He opened his mouth to press her further, but the group behind him was already getting restless.
