Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
Listening to the words of her foolish son, Dorothy felt she was about to faint from anger. She pinched herself hard to keep from passing out. Brandon noticed her rolling her eyes. He got annoyed and said, "Look at you. You can't even take a little criticism! I only scolded you a little, and you're already upset!" Dorothy was afraid that if he kept talking, she'd really have a heart attack, so she quickly changed the subject. "Enough with the useless talk. What do we do now? Olivia won't come out, and we can't just keep banging on her door. Are we supposed to just sit here and starve?" Brandon thought for a moment, then looked up. "Let's go upstairs and find her boyfriend! She won't be able to hide if he's involved." Dorothy hesitated. "Is that really going to work?" Deep down, she knew what Olivia was like. There was no way she was actually involved with that guy from the 15th floor. She'd just made up the story to put Olivia in her place. But Brandon was convinced the two of them were a thing. Before Dorothy could object, he was already stomping upstairs. She had no choice but to hurry after him. When they got to the 15th floor, the hallway door blocked their way again. Brandon scoffed, "These people are weird. Putting one security door in front of their apartment isn't enough—they have to put another one in the hallway. Talk about being paranoid." Dorothy said, "City people are cautious. They're scared someone will show up at their door to rob them." Brandon remembered how Harold had punched him twice before and turned to warn her. "Don't start a fight. If we lose, we'll be in trouble. We just need to make enough noise that they can't stand it. That way, they'll go looking for Olivia, and she won't be able to pretend nothing's happening." Dorothy agreed. "Definitely no fighting. With this heat, fighting could give you heatstroke like your dad had. That'd be a disaster." With their plan set, they started pounding on the door. "Harold, come out! Don't pretend you're not home. I know you're in there!" "Come on out, you homewrecker. You got involved with that cheater, Olivia, and killed my brother. You even stole from us! Give back what belongs to us!" Inside, Ghania, who had been feeding her rabbits, finally had enough. She'd put up with their occasional yelling and cursing before, but now they actually came up and yelled at her door! Enough was enough. Ghania put down her rabbit and grabbed her crossbow, bristling with anger. "Let's do this!" Harold was hesitant. "Mom, what about Olivia ... " Ghania snapped, "Don't worry, we're just teaching them a lesson. Olivia doesn't care about them. She won't mind." She found a blue medicinal bottle in the cabinet and soaked all the arrows in it. Meanwhile, the two outside were still shouting. When they heard a noise from inside, their eyes lit up with excitement, thinking someone was finally coming out. They exchanged a look and got even louder. See, cursing at the door really works. It didn't take long to get them to open up!They braced themselves, but the steel door never opened all the way. Instead, a small peephole slid open. Then, Ghania's icy voice rang out. "Today, I'm going to teach you two foul-mouthed troublemakers a real lesson!" Just then, an arrow whistled through the air, striking Brandon right in the shoulder. Dorothy screamed. Before she could even worry about her son, another arrow hit her shoulder, too. They both panicked. "Murder! Someone's trying to kill us ... " Before she could finish her sentence, another arrow flew past Brandon's ear, slicing his face open. Brandon had only ever fought other kids in the village. He'd never seen anything like this and nearly wet himself in fright. The two of them scrambled to run for their lives. Arrows kept whizzing by behind their backs, hitting them each again until they finally disappeared down the stairs. Ghania closed the shooting hole and gave a cold snort. "Biggest idiots in the world. VIP cowards!" Harold asked with a grin, "How'd it go?" Ghania replied, "Relax. I didn't aim for the head or heart. All the arrows hit safe spots." Harold gave her a thumbs-up. "My dear Mother, your archery skills just keep getting better!" Ghania rolled her eyes. "I'm not stupid. Stuck at home with nothing to do but practice my shot, of course I improved."She put the little blue bottle away and smirked, "Those two are going to have a rough time." Dorothy and Brandon ran down to the 13th floor. Dorothy's old wound from the dog bite still hadn't healed, and her bones still ached from Natalie's kick. Now, with even more injuries, she could barely run and quickly fell far behind her son. Brandon, young and scared out of his mind, bolted ahead and reached Unit 1301 in no time. He immediately slammed the door shut behind him, panting for breath. By the time Dorothy limped back, all she saw was a closed door. "Brandon, open up! I'm still outside!" Brandon was so terrified that he ignored her. He even locked the door behind him. Dorothy could only pound on the door in panic. "Brandon, let me in! What if the bad guys come after us? Open up!"
