Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog

Chapter 222 Trust Me, I'll Kill You

Maybe things have gotten even tenser outside lately? But if Boss is going to carry a gun all the time, isn't a handgun way more convenient? Lugging around a big shotgun everywhere must be such a hassle. Roderick scratched his head in confusion and headed back home. Once he got inside, he called out to his wife, "Honey, where's that handgun Mr. Holland gave me before?" Nadia tensed up the moment she heard him. "Did something happen?" Roderick saw the worry on her face and quickly reassured her, "Don't worry, it's nothing serious. I just noticed Mr. Holland has been carrying a gun ever since he got back, and I figured I should be on guard, too." Recently, disputes in the Hillside Villa District had been getting worse and worse. For all he knew, things could get just as chaotic here as they were outside. He figured it was safest to keep the handgun on him. Nadia dug the gun out of a drawer and handed it to him. "Just be careful, and don't let Dominic get his hands on it." Roderick nodded. The moment he felt the weight of the gun in his hand, he felt much more secure. If Mr. Holland's carrying a gun everywhere, then I will too. It never hurts to follow his lead. Meanwhile, over at Maplecourt, after eating her fill, Natalie finally felt ready to deal with the ongoing showdown between Cash and Lucky. "Lucky! Cash! At ease. Attention!" The dog and the rooster instantly stopped fighting and stood at attention before her. She took out two bowls of spring water from her space and waved them in front of their eyes. The two little troublemakers perked up immediately. "I know you both can understand me. Listen up. From now on, if you two don't fight, you'll get to drink this water." They glanced at each other—a wagging tail here, a fluttering wing there. Natalie paused, then added, "But if you get into a fight, you're not getting any for a whole week." With that, she set the bowls on the floor. Both of them instantly went to their own bowl and started drinking quietly, perfectly behaved. Natalie watched their peaceful truce with satisfaction. Just then, there was suddenly a knock on the door. She went over to check and found Olivia standing outside. "Nat, I forgot to give you this earlier!" With that, she handed over the assault rifle and a box of bullets. Natalie was surprised. "Why are you giving it back?" Olivia replied, "You weren't around before, so I held onto the gun to guard the place. But now that you're back, there's no reason for me to keep it." Natalie hesitated. "But ... " Olivia winked. "I know you trust me, but weapons like this should be under your own care. If there's ever real danger, you can always hand it to me then." With that, she pressed the gun into Natalie's hands and walked straight home. Natalie watched her go, feeling a warmth in her chest. She knew Olivia was just trying to give her a sense of security. She couldn't help but think of Cassian. He'd done the same, too. He refused to take her gun. They'd completely overturned her belief in her previous life that people were generally untrustworthy. She bit her lip, thinking how lucky she was. Everything and everyone in this second life seemed so much better. But right then, another wailing voice echoed from outside the door. "There's no justice! Someone let their dog bite me, and they won't even pay my medical bills!" "Poor me. I'm just a widow, trying to make a living with my child, and I still get bullied like this!" Natalie's face darkened instantly. I take back what I just said! There are still plenty of frustrating people and things in this world! She ignored Dorothy outside and went back into Unit 1402. Inside, she saw Cash poking his head around, hunting for cockroaches. Natalie was surprised. After being gone for a while, the place had cockroaches again. If not for Cash, she never would have noticed. She praised the rooster. Cash perked up, darting around and catching cockroaches everywhere. Before long, he'd eaten three more. Natalie waited until he stopped searching. After making sure the apartment was clear, she finally relaxed and went to her bedroom to sleep. She lay there with her eyes closed, but Dorothy's wailing kept her awake. After a while, Natalie finally lost her patience. She stormed to the entryway, unlocked the layers of locks on the door then rushed out to give Dorothy a hard kick. The old lady went silent at once, her skinny little body tumbling down the stairs with a clatter. Natalie's ears were finally at peace. She let out a satisfied sigh and calmly walked down the steps. She pressed a finger to Dorothy's nose—she was still breathing. Relieved, Natalie grabbed her by the collar and yanked her up, then slapped her face over and over until it was swollen. "This isn't your countryside village, and I'm not Olivia. If you ever disturb my sleep again ... " Natalie leaned in and threatened in a low voice, "Trust me, I'll kill you." Dorothy shrank back, terrified by her icy glare. Back home, Dorothy had gotten into plenty of brawls with other villagers before, but she'd never seen a glare like this. The only person she'd ever seen wear that look was her husband—and that was when he was slaughtering pigs. Once Dorothy finally quieted down, Natalie gave a cold snort, tossed her aside, and went back inside. With no one bothering her this time, she was finally able to drift off to sleep.
