Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
Before Kelvin could say a word, Magnus's eyes widened. "An assault rifle?!" Kelvin spun around, staring at him in disbelief. "Magnus..." Magnus gave the slightest shake of his head. Kelvin turned back instantly, pressing the nervous underling for answers. "Talk! Who did it?!" Natalie, watching their reaction, tapped her fingers lightly on the table, thoughtful. Magnus, clearly rattled, joined in. "Quick, who has the assault rifle?" Their focus was completely different. Kelvin wanted to know who killed Cyril. Magnus only cared about who held such a dangerous weapon. The frightened underling stammered, "They say it's two women from Maplecourt. One's named Natalie, the other Olivia." Kelvin's jaw clenched. "Maplecourt." Magnus's eyebrows shot up. "Women?" At the side, Cassian gave Natalie a quiet glance and whispered, "You really are calm as stone." Natalie curved her lips. "Why panic? I'm Bonnie now." Cassian looked forward. "So, which one do you want later?" Natalie answered, "Stick to the plan. The monkey's yours; the pig's mine." Cassian arched a brow. "You think you can handle that raging boar?" Natalie smirked. "Thanks to my teacher's training, no problem. Besides, the knockout drug's already in their system."Cassian pressed his lips together. "Not your teacher." Natalie froze. "Can you please focus on what matters?" Cassian said, dead serious, "This matters." While the two bantered, the crowd had already exploded into a frenzy. Under Kelvin's lead, the inner wall men dropped their forks and glasses. The whole place roared with chants. "Kill Natalie!" "Kill Olivia!" "Kill Natalie!" "Kill Olivia!" Sitting at the first table, Natalie herself went silent. Then the underling, who came to deliver the message, suddenly blurted, "Right! They say Natalie's bald, and Olivia has a dog. Easy to recognize!" Blended into the crowd, Natalie nearly rolled her eyes. Dude, you got it all wrong. I'm not bald. But the mention of a dog turned the whole room's attention on her. Hundreds of eyes landed on Natalie at once. She raised her head slowly and said, calm as ever, "Why are you all staring at me?" Kelvin gritted his teeth. "Because you have a dog too!" He had long suspected that something was off about this Bonnie. From her name to her story, nothing ever added up. Now his gut told him—this woman had something to do with his brother's death.Natalie kept her cool. "Yes, I own a dog. But my last name isn't Solace, and my name's not Olivia." Kelvin snapped back, "But your last name is Ashford!" Natalie shot right back. "So what if it is? There are plenty of Ashfords in this world! The people Natalie Ashford killed have nothing to do with me!" "You—!" Kelvin's eyes burned red. He had just gotten word of his brother's death. Rage rushed through him. Kelvin lunged forward to grab her. Magnus barked, "Kelvin! Don't take your anger out on her!" Kelvin glared at him. "Magnus, you have to believe me. She's hiding something!" Magnus had worked hard to win this woman's favor. He was just waiting for the party to end so he could finally call her his. Of course he would defend her now! "Kelvin," Magnus said firmly, "Bonnie may own a dog, but she's not the only person in this base with one. And she's not Olivia Solace. I know you're hurting. I'm hurting too. But we have to stay calm. We can't accuse her without proof." "Magnus! Names can be faked!" Kelvin shot back. "I've doubted her since she joined this base. Think about it—she showed up right when Cyril was killed. You're telling me that's a coincidence?" Magnus hesitated, his face clouded with doubt. Kelvin pressed on, gritting his teeth. "Fine. I won't hurt her. But we need to restrain her. If she's innocent, we'll let her go later. No harm done." Magnus could say nothing more. His expression tightened as he glanced at Natalie. Natalie swept her eyes over the crowd. Hundreds of people filled the place. At the door and around the tables, six armed guards stood watch. Add Magnus and Kelvin, and that made eight pistols surrounding her on all sides. North, south, east, and west—no escape. Even if she pulled out her rifle now, she might not get away alive. Her chances of survival were close to zero. Way too risky. Maybe she should just play the innocent act, put on a tearful face, and stall for time. She whispered to Cassian, "How much longer for your drug to work?" Cassian glanced at his watch. "Less than a minute." Oh? That would do. Natalie quickly put on a wounded expression, eyes glistening with tears as she looked at Magnus. "Magnus, I swear I'm innocent! I've been framed! I'm wronged—" Before she could finish, the men around her suddenly began to sway on their feet.
