Theresa, the Doomsday Queen
"Has Ms. Hall returned?" Lily finally stopped what she was doing as she raised her head to look at Calvin with hopeful eyes. "Not her! I'm talking about that camp leader!" "Just who on Earth are you talking about?" Calvin was so agitated that he could barely get the words out. Eventually, he finally managed to choke out, "It's Harrance!" Theresa received a message from the camp 10 minutes later. Lily didn't want to see Harrance. Theresa couldn't help but feel an inexplicable sense of vindication when she saw that text. She stared down at the man in front of her. One of the guards had fed him some water but did little else. So, he was still wearing filthy rags in the middle of winter and was curled up in a corner. His face was cracked and rough. He looked nothing like the lively yet ambitious man she had first met. "Hey, you." "Ms. Hall! Lily is coming, right?" Harrance's dull eyes suddenly brightened with life. "Sorry, but no. She doesn't want to see you." Theresa rose to her full height. "Figure out your own accommodations. If you want to leave, leave. If you want to stay, find a camp that's willing to take you in." Harrance froze. The light in his eyes instantly dimmed as shock, disbelief, and a kind of unspeakable sorrow surged within them. He scrambled forward on his hands and knees when he saw that Theresa was about to leave. "Ms. Hall, I'm begging you. Let me see her! Ms. Hall, please let me see Lily!" "Are you done? Do you think I'd stoop that low to stop you from seeing her? She doesn't want to see you!" Theresa lost her patience and kicked him again. Harrance promptly coughed up a mouthful of pus and blood. Then, his eyes rolled back as he collapsed onto the ground with a thud. Theresa stared at his unmoving form blankly. Was he trying to use his sorry state to milk sympathy?Kyle stepped forward and checked his pulse. Then, he looked up at her and intoned gravely, "Theresa, his body temperature is dangerously low. His heartbeat is barely there. He's dying." Theresa inhaled deeply. It seemed that Harrance had dragged himself here on his dying breath. He was covered in injuries, and several of them looked fatal. Yet, he had pushed through just to see Lily one final time. Theresa immediately tossed him an emergency pill and rushed him to a hospital in Ansford. "Ms. Hall, it's a good thing you treated him so quickly," the doctor said. "He would definitely be dead if you hadn't." "How is he now?" "His body is severely malnourished, and his health is very frail. He has multiple critical internal injuries. Fortunately, he's here. So, he'll pull through. His organs are recovering, but it'll take a long time before he's stable." Just then, Theresa heard a weak voice from the ward. "Lily… Lily… Lily, I was wrong…" Theresa glanced at the half-dead Harrance and said nothing more. "Alright. Keep him here. Do inform me once he wakes." "Yes, Ms. Hall." Only then did Theresa leave the hospital. She headed straight back to the camp once she left the hospital. "Lily, you've done all the work that needs to be done for the day. You should take a break," Calvin said as he checked in on Lily in her office. Lily continued flipping through a stack of documents. "No. Calvin, bring me the supply list. I want to recalculate everything." "Isn't that something we do once a week? Lily, you just checked it yesterday! Are you really going to do it again?" "Just bring it here," she snapped somewhat impatiently. None of them could tell whether she was frustrated because of work or because of the emotional turmoil they all thought she was facing.Just then, someone paid Lily a visit. Calvin's eyes lit up with hope as soon as he saw Theresa. He was about to call out when Lily waspishly called out from her desk, "Where is that list? I need that right now!" Lily looked up and promptly saw Theresa at the door. All her irritation and frustration disappeared just like that. "Ms. Hall, you're here!" Lily exclaimed happily. "Lily, you're doing an excellent job." Theresa approached, smiling as she looked over the neatly organized reports. Theresa never had to worry about the camp's internal affairs now that she had Lily at the helm. Lily jerked to her feet upon hearing her praise. The austere look on her face softened with a hint of shy pride. "Ms. Hall, you flatter me. I'm happy to pull my weight when it's needed, especially when it's for you." And she meant every word. Her horizons had widened after she joined the Blazing Sun Alliance. She had felt like a captive whale that had been reintroduced to the vast ocean. Only then did she realize just how big the world was and how powerful a camp could be. The Blazing Sun Alliance was beyond anything she could've imagined, with more than 60 camps working together to rebuild their society. There was an abundant amount of food, strong security forces, a functioning social system, and enough living space for its residents.
