Theresa, the Doomsday Queen

Chapter 690 The Only Ones Standing

Harrance's feet slowed before they finally stopped. As he spun on his heel, he growled in annoyance, "What are you trying to pull now? I already told you that Lily is the one I love. It's over between us!" The next second, a malformed-looking figure lunged at him at terrifying speed. "Gragh! Clara's jaws were stretched apart like a bloody maw as she attacked. "Beep! Solan Camp is down." "Beep! East Sea Camp is down." "Beep! Tyson Camp is down." "…Halaeus Camp is down." "…Laeman Camp is down." "…Asedonia Camp is down." "…Down." "…Down." 289 bases worldwide had gone dark within 24 hours. Only Theresa's Blazing Sun Alliance and the three Ark Camps remained standing. In the office, everyone fell into a suffocating silence as the cold mechanical announcements continued. "This is the second wave," Bennie said. "Every camp except ours suffered a simultaneous outbreak of another zombie virus. The virus has mutated. The rate this strain infects and transforms humans into zombies is off the charts. "At the moment, HQ and the three Ark Camps are the only ones still standing. There are no other survivors." Those four words made their hearts turn cold. It meant the deaths of everyone else but them. There wasn't a single survivor from all those locations. Ground Zero had wiped everyone out. Theresa was lucky to have a system to aid her. However, that wasn't going to work forever. Just then, the camp's alarm started wailing once more. Theron's urgent voice came through her earpiece as he cried out, "Theresa, there's a zombie horde at least a million-strong outside the canyon!" It was now 9 p.m. Theresa rushed out of her office the second Theron reported the numbers. A helicopter carried her toward the canyon at the edge of the Branford and Crestmont. The canyon was their "zombie gate." It was a perfect location that was easy to defend but hard to invade. It was the perfect choke point. The natural buffer zone was right behind it. When her helicopter touched down in the canyon, she saw their once-impenetrable defensive line being crushed by the tidal wave of zombies. The horde stampeded through layer after layer of mines. Their explosives were triggered over and over again, turning the night sky bright. Yet, the zombies' advance didn't even falter. She could see grotesque figures of past humans crawling out of the canyon before barreling forward with their wide jaws and razor-sharp claws. They were following their only instinct, which was to devour everything in their path. The horde smashed against their defenses like a rotting, corpse-infested tsunami. This was the first time that Theron, who was stationed on the front line, felt overwhelmed. The rocket launchers and machine guns on him were burning red-hot as he kept firing at the nightmare fuel. Alas, his efforts were futile. There were simply too many zombies. Far too many for them to handle.Their firepower might as well be another reenactment of David and Goliath, except there was no turning the tide for this one. "Theron, fall back!" He heard Theresa shouting amid the chaos. She ordered everyone to retreat as soon as she got there. She wanted every last human stationed at the canyon out of there. There were only a few hundred soldiers posted in this area. They could never hold back a million corpses. "They'll pour straight into the buffer zone if we fall back! That's our first line of defense!" Theron roared, firing as fast as he could. The Blazing Sun Alliance was right behind the buffer zone. If they withdrew now, the zombies would reach their first line of defense come morning. They could handle tens of thousands and even hundreds of thousands of zombies. They'd designed the traps at the buffer zone for that specific reason. But a horde that stood a million-strong? It was an impossible task. The entire buffer zone would be gone once the canyon fell. When that happened, the zombies would once again be at their gates. "Retreat!" Theresa jumped from the low-flying helicopter, reaching out for Theron. Just then, seven to eight military-clad Level 6 zombies leapt at them. She had seen those towering and seemingly indestructible bodies before. Their black-streaked, pale faces, with their clouded eyes, were more than enough for her to confirm that they were part of the Legion. She could recognize their physiques and their explosive strength anywhere. Theron's gaze sharpened the second his eyes fell on them. He slammed a new string of rounds into his gun, uncaring of how the recoil slammed against his shoulder as he raised the muzzle and fired.
