Grief, Betrayals, and a Core of Blaze
Weren't they afraid of scaring the children! Ruby immediately picked Susie up, saying, "Come on, I’ll take you to find Sean." "Oh." Susie didn't dare to make a fuss this time. Although she really wanted to play with Holt, he was sick. She shouldn't get in the way of Daddy treating him. Besides, she needed to apologize to Sean. Seeing that Susie wasn't struggling, Ruby headed for Sean's room. Baron caught the movement out of the corner of his eye but didn't stop them. He continued to speak to Holt in the gentlest voice possible. "It’s okay. No one will ever hurt Holt again. Don't worry, everything will be alright. How about I take you back to your room?" Holt nodded obediently. Baron took him to his room. Holt immediately climbed onto the bed and pulled the covers over himself, as if that was the only way he could feel safe. This sight made Baron's heart ache. He thought about what James had done to him. Even if it was for protection, the child was too young, and the trauma he suffered was immense. In this so-called act of protection, there were no winners. If I didn't have power, would my wife and children suffer the same fate in the future? Baron paused. The idea he'd had of dissolving his underground organization was now quietly beginning to change. Just then, Baron’s phone rang. Seeing the caller ID, his expression darkened. "Mr. Baron, our people saw Payne Brian go to meet Rachel." Hearing Shauna’s report, Baron’s brow furrowed. "Got it. It's not unusual for Brian to meet Rachel, given the circumstances. The real question is whether Rachel will be released without charges. Keep your people on it. Oh, and send some gifts to the higher-ups. It's time to move our hidden piece." "Understood, Mr. Baron." After Shauna hung up, Baron’s eyes narrowed for a moment before returning to normal. Holt had already completely retreated into his own world. Baron could see he was in a state where he refused to communicate. He found the housekeeper, gave a few instructions, and then left the room. Ruby had settled the children down and returned to the living room. When she saw Baron come out, she couldn't help but say, "What on earth was Natalie thinking? Why would she suddenly bring a child like that back? Didn't she consider how Sean would feel, whether he’d be able to accept it?" Baron helped Ruby sit on the sofa and said in a low voice, "Mom, this child’s life is tragic. Listen to me. If it weren't for him, my wife might not have made it back from the high seas. You could say this child is my wife's savior." "What?" Ruby paused, then looked toward Holt's room. "What really happened?" Baron then recounted the story of Holt and Beth. When Ruby finished listening, she sighed deeply. "That child has really had a bitter life. With a father like that, it's a miracle he's even alive. Was his surgery successful?" "It was. But he needs a lot of rest to recover. And he’s withdrawn; his mental state will take time to heal. My wife and I, our thinking was... the people after them haven't been found, and we don't know if the mastermind will try to harm the mother and son again. That's why we brought them here. Besides, being with the other two children might help him return to normal. We just didn't expect Sean's reaction to be so strong." Baron truly hadn't anticipated Sean would reject Holt so strongly, but he would make time to talk to him. At that very moment, Sean had the door to his room cracked open, and he and Susie were eavesdropping. "So Holt’s life is that miserable. His daddy is just too awful." Susie already had a soft spot for Holt; hearing his backstory made her feel even worse for him. Sean didn't say anything, but a trace of pity flashed in his eyes. Seeing as Goldfish has had it so rough, I guess I won't hold it against him for now. Sean closed the door with a huff, then grabbed a model airplane from his desk and gave it to Susie. "Here. You give this to that Goldfish. It’s a welcome gift from me. I don’t want people saying I don't have any manners." When Susie saw Sean giving away his favorite model airplane, she smiled. "You’re just putting on a tough act. This is your favorite one." "Go, go, go! Don't mess with me." Having been found out, Sean looked annoyed and shoved Susie out of the room. Susie wasn't angry. She cheerfully took the model airplane to Holt's room. Ruby saw this and, worried that Holt might have an episode and hurt Susie, instinctively moved to stop her, but Baron held her back.
