Grief, Betrayals, and a Core of Blaze
Sean hadn't planned on looking, but Holt was blocking his way. His brow furrowed tightly. He instinctively wanted to swat the drawing away, but his eyes were caught by the colors on the page. The picture Holt gave him was a portrait of their family of four. He had to admit, Holt was very good. Whether it was Baron, Natalie, or even himself and Susie, the likenesses were uncanny. Moreover, the drawing exuded a feeling of happiness and warmth. Suddenly, Sean really liked this picture. "Don't think I'll be nice to you just because you gave me something." He snatched the drawing, turned around, and went back to his room. Seeing him act like this, Susie said with dissatisfaction, "Look at him! He took Holt's gift and he's still so rude!" To be honest, Ruby didn't particularly like Holt. The child was too withdrawn, and his arrival had immediately upset Sean. It was impossible for Ruby to have no opinion. But this child was her daughter's student, and she didn't know him well. So, when she heard what Susie said, her voice was unavoidably stern. "How can you talk about him like that? You need to remember, before Holt came, you and your brother were a family. Is it right to talk about your brother like that for an outsider?" Susie blinked her big eyes, suddenly feeling wronged. "Grandma, you're scolding me too? What did I do wrong? Why is Brother ignoring me? Why are you talking to me like this? Waaah!" The little girl didn't care who was sleeping. Feeling wronged, she immediately threw back her head and howled. Her wail terrified Holt. He quickly covered his head, scrambled into a corner, squatted down, buried his head between his knees, and trembled, covering his ears.Seeing this, Ruby suddenly realized something. "You poor child…" She wanted to step forward, but Holt shrank further into the corner, his body shaking violently. When Susie cried, she cried without a care in the world. She didn't notice any of this and just kept on wailing. In the bedroom, Baron heard his little ancestor's cries and frowned slightly. He instinctively glanced at Natalie beside him. Natalie’s brow was knitted tightly, clearly disturbed by the noise, but she was too exhausted to open her eyes. Baron gently slipped his arm out from under her, pulled the blanket up over her, and then padded barefoot out of the bedroom, quietly closing the door behind him. "What's going on?" Baron tied the belt of his robe, slipped on his slippers in the hallway, and then walked toward the living room. When Susie saw Baron, she seemed to feel even more aggrieved. "Daddy! Grandma scolded me!" Susie was the first to tattle. Ruby felt like she wanted to cry but had no tears. "No, this child…" Ruby suddenly didn't know how to explain to her son-in-law. Baron quickly scanned the scene. Noticing Holt's condition, he walked over swiftly. "Holt! Relax! You're at your teacher's house. It's okay." He stepped forward, firmly pulled Holt up, and held him in his arms, patting his back over and over, very gently. "Relax. Follow me. Come on, deep breaths. In… out…" Baron’s voice, still husky and magnetic from sleep, had an inexplicable power to soothe Holt's fear. Besides, he was familiar with Baron's scent. This was Uncle Witch Doctor, the one who had treated him. He was a good person.Holt gradually quieted down in Baron's arms. Susie had originally thought that when her daddy saw her crying, he would run down and hug her first. She never imagined he would ignore her and go straight to Holt. She stopped crying and just stared at the scene. Suddenly, she felt a little uncomfortable, as if her daddy, who belonged to her, had suddenly been snatched away. But the person was Holt, so she suppressed that uncomfortable feeling, though she still felt awkward. Was this how her brother felt earlier? Susie suddenly thought of Sean. It turned out Grandma was right to scold her. She seemed to have unintentionally hurt Sean. Susie suddenly felt she should apologize to Sean. But seeing Holt's current state, she also felt a little curious. She quietly sidled up to Ruby, slipped her hand into Ruby's, and whispered, "Grandma, is Holt sick?" "I think so." Looking at Holt's condition, Ruby had her suspicions, and her brow furrowed tightly. What were her daughter and son-in-law thinking, bringing such a sick child home?
