Grief, Betrayals, and a Core of Blaze
As he left, James felt the mountain-like pressure that had been weighing on him finally disappear. He couldn't help but feel a bit emotional. He, James, had actually managed to see the living Mr. Baron in his lifetime! Not only that, but his son had also become the final disciple of Mr. Baron's wife. This was like two pies falling from the sky and hitting him square in the face. If he could follow Mr. Baron, would he no longer have to live a life of hiding? Could he even go see Beth and his son from time to time? He wondered how Beth was doing now. James' expression dimmed. He truly loved Beth, loved her dearly, but he was tainted now. He was no longer worthy of someone as good as her. James lowered his head in anguish, letting the others untie him and allowing the family doctor to tend to his wounds. His mind was now completely filled with the days he once spent with Beth. He didn't dare hope that Beth could forgive him. No matter what, it was a fact that he had abused his son, and it was a fact that he had intentionally given his son leukemia. Furthermore, he had indeed slept with Alice. He was unclean. How could he dare to hope for Beth's forgiveness? Beth had once said that a cheating man was like someone else's used sanitary napkin being shoved back at her to use. Wasn't that just disgusting? In Beth's heart, he was probably that sanitary napkin now. But James had no regrets. He was the one who had walked the wrong path and dragged Beth and his son into it. If he had to choose all over again, he would still do the same thing. After all, nothing was more important than being alive. Now that Beth and his son had Mr. Baron and his wife to look after them, their lives would only get better and better.Baron didn't care what James was thinking. He removed his mask as soon as he left the basement. The sky outside was already dark. He raised his hand to check the time; it was already past midnight. At this hour, he didn't know if Natalie was asleep. Thinking of James' desperate measures, and how he and Beth—once a loving couple—had ended up like this, Baron felt an indescribable tightness in his chest. Not all lovers in this world get a happy ending. So, would he and Natalie be able to grow old together? After all, Natalie didn't love him as much as she had loved Jensen. A person had lived in her heart for five years. Even though certain events had made Natalie give him up, could those five years of feelings truly be set aside? Baron realized he was actually feeling insecure and couldn't help but laugh at himself. What was wrong with him? Was Natalie not good to him? She trusted him, respected him. What more was there to be dissatisfied about? Baron asked himself this, yet he was clearly aware that while Natalie might like him, rely on him, and trust him... it wasn't necessarily love. He felt he was being overly dramatic. What was a grown man doing, caring about whether a woman loved him or not? As long as she was by his side and her heart was with him, wasn't that enough? But Baron still felt a pang of sadness. After all, Natalie had once done so many reckless things for Jensen. But with him, she was so cool and composed. It seemed she was only with him out of gratitude. If he hadn't been the one to save her from that fire, if it had been some other man, would Natalie be treating that man the same way she treated him now? Baron felt he was trapped in a vicious cycle. He took a deep breath, suppressed the chaotic thoughts in his mind, and headed toward the villa. The midnight wind was cold, chilling his face. The villa was silent when Baron entered. The servants were asleep, as was the housekeeper. Baron moved lightly, planning to take a shower in the guest bathroom—at least to wash off the smell of blood—before going to the master bedroom to find Natalie. But just as he lifted his foot, the living room light suddenly switched on. The glaring light made it difficult for Baron to adjust. "You’re back?" Natalie's familiar voice sounded from nearby. Baron was momentarily stunned. Someone was in the living room, and he hadn't even sensed them immediately! And that someone was Natalie! Baron stared blankly at Natalie. The insecurity and sadness in his heart instantly vanished when he saw her slightly reddened, worried eyes. "Yes, I’m back." Baron’s lips curved into a relieved smile. Natalie suddenly walked toward him. Baron subconsciously took a step back. "I’m cold, and I smell bad. I’ll go take a shower first." Hearing Baron say this, Natalie’s heart suddenly ached.
