He Cheated. I Rose.
People started whispering and talking among themselves. Wait... were they hearing this right? What did Arthur mean? Was he admitting he'd done wrong? He'd confirmed his engagement to Jennifer, then turned around and talked about his complicated history with Chloe. Did that mean Chloe really was the other woman? "Mr. Myers, what exactly is your relationship with Chloe?" "Mr. Myers, are you saying you were seeing Chloe while you were with Jennifer?" "Mr. Myers, can you just tell us clearly—what is going on between you and Chloe?" As soon as the reporter asked that, Arthur looked up and stared coldly at him. Was Arthur angry? "You really want to know what Chloe and I are to each other? So you can prove I'm a terrible person, right?" Arthur gave a cold laugh. "Fine. You're right. I am exactly what people say—a complete jerk." His voice got quieter. He lowered his head, as if something hit him hard, then smiled bitterly. "I've hurt her for so long, and now I can't even give her peace. I let all this garbage come after her. That's my fault. I messed up. I really am the worst." The reporters were stunned. The moment Arthur called himself a jerk, they had their headline. But then, just like that, his tone changed. What... was happening? "Sorry. I didn't protect her." As everyone watched, Arthur reached into the inside pocket of his suit, right over his heart, and carefully pulled out some papers. Every camera turned to him, focusing on what he held. When the word "divorce" appeared clearly on screen, gasps spread through the crowd. "Chloe and I were married in secret for years. Because I didn't appreciate what I had, we divorced six months ago. I should have protected her, kept her away from all this. As you can see, I failed." Arthur's smile was pained. "I'm a failure as a man." The reporters were shocked. Arthur had shown his divorce papers with Chloe—it was real, with both their names and the date clear. Arthur and Chloe had been married. Arthur was apologizing. He admitted he'd failed. So all the rumors online were false? The noise from the chaotic scene was getting louder. Arthur had confirmed Chloe was his ex-wife. That meant she was never the "other woman." As for Jennifer, the leaked video had already shown how she'd set things up. Did that mean this whole mess was Jennifer's plan? "Mr. Myers, about the rumors involving Ms. Williams, can you tell us if she planned all this?" "Mr. Myers, did you divorce Chloe because of Ms. Williams?" "Mr. Myers, could you explain what those 'things' that got in the way were?"Arthur didn't answer. As the sharp questions kept coming, several staff members rushed over and pulled him back toward the company building. "Sorry, everyone. That's all for today's press conference." Donald, who had been waiting nearby, stepped up and spoke briefly. Reporters tried to push forward for more, but the security team, already in place, stopped them. In the crowd, Jennifer watched from under a baseball cap, her eyes cold. When Arthur spoke those words, all the warmth left her face, replaced by pure ice. "Arthur, you chose this. Don't blame me." She clenched her fist, turned, and disappeared into the crowd. ***** Back inside the company, Arthur shook off the staff pulling at him, annoyed. "Let go. I know what I'm doing." The senior executives and board members of Myers Group watched his stubborn behavior, their faces full of worry. "Mr. Myers, you and Chloe were married all this time, and the board knew nothing. If we'd known earlier, we would have stopped those ugly rumors." "Mr. Myers, saying all this now—did you think about the consequences? If public opinion turns against Myers Group, who's going to take the loss?" Arthur lifted his eyes and gave a cold look to the executive who had spoken. "Public opinion? When everyone was attacking Chloe, I did nothing. This is the only thing I can do for her now. I was her husband, and when she needed me most, I stood by and did nothing. And now you think I'm afraid of public opinion?" Arthur's voice rose into a raw, angry shout. The shareholders and senior executives were shaken. The calm, controlled CEO they knew was gone, and this was what was left.
