He Cheated. I Rose.
"Eugene, you don't really know me yet. One day you might discover who I really am—and regret all this." Chloe gently moved his hand away, then took it in hers. "I just ended a pointless relationship, and I'm not ready to start dating someone new yet." "I'll wait. However long it takes." Chloe gave a faint smile. "Get some rest. I have things to handle." She carefully placed his hand back on the bed, stopping him from getting up. "Before you chase anyone, focus on getting better first." With those words, she turned and left. Eugene leaned against the headboard, watching her go. When Chloe opened the door, Landon—who'd been listening outside—almost fell into the room. He quickly straightened up, saw Chloe, and peeked past her. "The medicine... did it work?"Landon studied her face, but found no clues. "He's awake. He took the medicine himself. The rest is up to you. I need to go." Chloe gave the brief update and slipped past the stunned Landon. "Awake?" Landon stood frozen for a second, then rushed into the room. Seeing Eugene lying there with color back in his face, Landon finally relaxed. "You scared me to death. Can I apply for emotional distress damages?" Landon walked over, still complaining. "If something really happens to you, how are we workers supposed to get by?" Eugene's lips curved slightly. "Don't worry. I won't die." "You—" Landon was about to continue his rant when he noticed Eugene's annoyingly bright smile. Poisoned, nearly dead, and he could still smile like that? Like sunshine? Was he even human? "Eugene, did you take the medicine yourself? Or did Chloe feed you?" Landon probed, his gossip senses tingling. Eugene glanced at him but didn't answer. Instead, he asked coolly, "Did you get the results?" Landon had been waiting for the juicy details, and the sudden change of topic almost made him stumble. He pulled over a chair and sat down. "Of course. It's straightforward. But the person behind it—well." Then he laid it all out. It was Carolyn. The evidence was clear. She was the one who mixed honey into the feed, and she was also the one who "thoughtfully" prepared snacks that had something extra inside. "The food contained a special spice—harmless on its own. But the costume Oralia wore had some special chemical sprayed on it—one that lures venomous snakes over." Landon frowned. "Do Carolyn and Oralia have some history? It doesn't make sense. If Carolyn wanted to target someone, shouldn't it be Ms. Lewis?" Eugene's eyes darkened. He ran through everything in his mind and understood Carolyn's plan perfectly. A clever swap, right in plain sight. Even if they found out, no one would suspect her. Her real target had always been Chloe. The devoted fan beside her was just a pawn. Carolyn even got hurt during filming. With that, no one would look their way. Oralia had the accidents—the horse went wild and the snake appeared. As long as Oralia was involved, Chloe wouldn't stand aside. Once she stepped in, she walked right into Carolyn's trap. "You have all the evidence ready?" Eugene asked. "Of course. I supervised everything myself. You'll be satisfied." Landon ventured, "Should we go public with the evidence? Get her replaced on the crew? Have Kellian Media put her on ice?" "Send everything to Chloe. Let her decide what to do." A slow smile spread across Eugene's lips. "You just need to fan the flames and turn up the heat a little." Landon couldn't help thinking Eugene was sinking deeper into this love thing. "Are you sure? You seem like a different person all of a sudden." He shivered. Eugene was usually so cold, but the moment Chloe was involved, he got warm. "Have I changed?" Eugene murmured, leaning back and staring at the ceiling. "Liking someone means—other than being able to give her your whole life—you gotta love what she loves and hate what she hates." "I never knew you could go this hard. Did Chloe hear that? Was she moved?" Landon shot back. "That woman is dangerous." "How can I accept just being strangers to the person I liked right when I laid eyes on her?"
