He Cheated. I Rose.
Seeing Eugene pass out, Landon didn't care that Chloe was right there; he just kept muttering under his breath. "If anything happens to you, your dad will tear this whole city apart." He spotted the darkening bite on Eugene's wrist. The hand had already started to swell. Any longer, and he wasn't sure Eugene would make it. Chloe stayed quiet. She understood Landon's sharp tone came from fear, not anger. She watched Eugene lying motionless as the medics worked on him. His own words replayed in her mind. "Are you worried about me?" "Were you nervous about me?" Did her answer really matter? He'd asked her again, right before he passed out. "Don't head to the hospital. The Cosmos Group board meeting is about to start. All the major players are already in Capaville. If they find out Mr. Rosewood's hurt, it'll cause chaos. Go straight to his residence." He turned to Bruce. "Tell Mr. Moses to bring the equipment and meds here. Let's avoid any extra attention." The car didn't go toward the hospital. It turned the other way. After a few minutes, Chloe was startled. The route felt strangely familiar. They were heading toward... Riverville Prime Residence. When the car finally entered the estate and stopped in front of Villa No.1, it hit her—she and Eugene had been neighbors all along. What were the chances? Riverville Prime Residence had only eight villas. She lived in No.8. He lived in No.1. The car pulled inside. Several bodyguards rushed over and carefully carried Eugene indoors. The medics had just finished with the bite when David arrived. "Let me see him!" David's face tightened when he saw Eugene. He moved quickly to join the others.Chloe didn't go into the room. She stood quietly in the living room. The door was slightly open; she could see inside. She could've walked over and pushed it open. But she didn't. She didn't have the courage. Why? Was she scared? Someone like her—did she even know what fear felt like? Afraid—of what? The look in Eugene's eyes before he collapsed had shaken something inside her. She couldn't calm down. She didn't know why. A small voice whispered in her head, "Eugene has to be okay. If he's not, you'll never feel right again." She told herself that he got hurt because of her. If something happened to him, it would be partly her fault. "Good thing we got the antivenom in time. Otherwise, not even God could've saved him. A close call, but he's lucky." David's voice carried from the room, pulling Chloe back. She glanced toward the door. The tightness in her chest finally eased a little. He was okay. So good! "Ms. Lewis, please, sit down and rest." Bruce's voice came from beside her. Chloe turned. He was holding a glass of water. "Thanks." She took it. Just as she was about to sit, Landon's frustrated voice boomed from inside. "He's totally out cold! These are pills—how's he supposed to swallow them? And there are so many, all different kinds. This is brutal. Should we... use pliers to pry his mouth open?" "These are the best meds to prevent complications. The venom's under control, but we have to stop other issues. He needs to take them. Now." David sounded frustrated. "If that doesn't work, get two bodyguards. Force his mouth open, crush the pills, dissolve them, and pour them in." "David, you tired of being dean? If Mr. Rosewood finds out you made him take medicine like that, none of us will sleep again—because we'll be dead." Landon stared at him and let out a heavy sigh. "Then let me die. Better than dealing with what comes later, right?" David knew it was a terrible idea—downright reckless—but he was scraping the bottom of the barrel for options. He had nothing left. "I'll do it." A calm, steady voice sliced through the thick tension in the room. Landon and David jolted, heads snapping toward the door at the exact same time, eyes wide with surprise. Chloe stood there, holding the water, her expression steady. She met their eyes and said softly, "Give me the medicine." David got it in an instant—no questions, no hesitation. He took the small pile of pills from Landon's hand, stepped quickly over to Chloe, and passed them to her. "Separate the black and white ones. Black first, then white. Wait a few minutes in between," David explained quietly. "I understand.""Then I'll leave it to you." He finished, glanced back once more, and quickly stepped out. The other medics took the hint and left too. Landon stood there, watching Chloe. He paused, then turned and walked out without another word.
