Chapter 239 The Hidden Bite

"Get him checked—now!" Bruce said, then turned to Eugene with concern. "Mr—" Eugene glanced at Bruce, then looked at Chloe. His voice was soft but firm. "You can't keep being this reckless." Chloe didn't answer. Her eyes were fixed on Eugene's hand. When Bruce took the snake, she'd noticed something—a smear of blood on his white sleeve. Was it from the snake? Or... was it his? Had the snake bitten him? A tight feeling settled in her chest. She moved closer. "Are you okay?" she asked quietly. Eugene stared at her, his gaze fixed on her worried eyes. After a moment, a faint smile touched his lips. "I'm fine. Were you worried about me?" He said it completely seriously. His eyes held hers, like her answer mattered more than it should. Chloe froze. Worried? Was she? The rest of the people nearby were also watching them. She didn't think now was a good time to answer, so she quickly looked away and turned to the staff. "Let's get back to work." Brian rushed over, checking on both of them. He only left once he was sure Chloe and Oralia were really okay. "Listen up, everyone!" Brian announced. "I've called in a team to sweep the whole set. From now on, we're adding extra safety checks. What happened today won't happen again." The mood on set slowly settled. Oralia pulled herself together and got ready for the next scene. "I've ordered some snacks—relax for a bit," Brian called out. "Keep your spirits up!" Filming slowly resumed. Oralia and the male lead began running lines. Carolyn watched them, a cool flicker in her eyes—gone as quickly as it came. She put on a bright smile and chatted lightly with the crew. Seeing Oralia focused again, Chloe finally relaxed a little. "You tell me not to be reckless, Eugene, but look at you..." she said, her gaze still on Oralia. Eugene had stayed close this whole time. He'd scolded her—then jumped right into danger himself. Now it was her turn to lecture him. But before she could finish, his left hand came down heavily on her shoulder. He leaned into her, his weight sudden and solid. "Hold on to me... I'm a little unsteady," he said, his voice low. Chloe's eyes widened. "Eugene, what—" He slumped against her, and she caught him on instinct. One look at his face told her everything—something was very wrong. She turned his wrist and saw them clearly: two small, dark puncture marks. It was a snake bite. He'd been bitten—and hadn't said a word. He'd just stood there, acting like nothing was wrong. He'd blocked the snake from her, grabbed it and taken the bite himself. That snake was venomous. And now... "Bruce!" Chloe's voice was sharp. "I'm here, Ms. Lewis!" Bruce had been poised to move the second Eugene wobbled. He'd been counting the seconds in his head, panic clawing at him. "Get him to the hospital. Now." She kept an arm around Eugene and started moving. No one on set could know he'd been bitten—it would cause panic. They got him away quickly.Just as they reached the edge of the set, Landon's car pulled up. Chloe helped Eugene into the back seat. His hand closed around hers. He met her eyes and gave a weak smile. "Were you nervous about me?" he said, like it was something he knew for sure. Before Chloe could reply, the moment the door closed, Eugene passed out. "Eugene!" Her voice broke. Really? Making jokes at a time like this? Couldn't he be serious for once? "Move! Save him!" Landon yelled, fear and anger mixing in his voice. Luckily, the doctor had brought the right antivenom. Bruce showed a photo of the snake, and the medic identified it right away. They injected the serum and began cleaning the wound. "This idiot," Landon muttered, yanking open Eugene's shirt so the doctor could work faster. "What's more important—flirting, or staying alive?"
