Chapter 134 Eugene Intervened

Chloe stood still, watching Arthur charge toward her. Her eyes narrowed as she briefly considered delivering a sharp kick to his most vulnerable area that would leave him writhing on the floor. Suddenly, a tall figure moved between them, blocking her from Arthur's approach. Just as Arthur's hand reached out to grab Chloe, someone intercepted his wrist with unexpected speed. The grip was immediate and unyielding. A jolt of pain raced up Arthur's arm. "Who?" he shouted, his eyes lifting to meet a pair of piercing eyes. That single glance sent a shiver down Arthur's spine. That strange, unsettling tension returned instantly. The moment passed quickly. Arthur recognized the man—it was the mysterious stranger who had showed up earlier with Joseph."Sir, physical force is no way to treat a lady," Eugene stated, though the polite smile on his face didn't reach his eyes. His grip on Arthur's wrist remained iron-tight. "Mind your own business! Who are you?" Arthur snapped, trying to pull his arm back. Yet no matter how hard he struggled, Eugene held him effortlessly, as if restraining a child. Who was this man? How could he be so strong? "Whether I have the right to intervene isn't up to you," Eugene replied calmly. He glanced back at Chloe, positioning himself as her shield. "That's for Ms. Lewis to decide." "What?" Arthur stared blankly, completely confused by the response. The disturbance had drawn the attention of nearby guests. Hearing the commotion, Joseph turned and made his way toward them. "What's going on here?" Joseph asked. Right then, Arthur paid no mind to taking the opportunity to get closer to Joseph and improve their relationship. He'd made up his mind to go all out the minute he went looking for Chloe. What could be more humiliating than being betrayed by his own wife? Whatever the truth was, if Chloe and Joseph were involved, he was determined to take her away, regardless of the consequences. Madilyn and Jennifer rushed to Arthur's side. Seeing Joseph approach, Madilyn quickly forced a smile. "Mr. Slade, it's been too long," she said, extending her hand in greeting. But Joseph walked straight past her, heading directly for Arthur and Eugene. "What is happening here?" Joseph asked Arthur directly. Arthur's face darkened. Though he looked at Joseph, his question was directed at Chloe. "What's your relationship with Mr. Slade? He gave you a special red invitation and invited you to his private rooms upstairs. Chloe, don't you think you owe me an explanation?" By the end, Arthur was nearly shouting. The surrounding guests overheard everything, and the shock was visible on their faces. Arthur was the CEO of Myers Group—why was he speaking to Chloe this way? Was there history between them? Wait, had Arthur just publicly questioned Chloe about her relationship with Joseph? Did that mean... Just moments before, everyone had been merely curious about Chloe. Now, Arthur's outburst had escalated the situation dramatically. "Arthur! You—" Madilyn tugged urgently at Arthur's sleeve, forcing a smile while trying to calm him. This wasn't the time to reveal that Arthur and Chloe had been married. If Capaville's elite families learned that the prestigious Myers family had accepted a country girl, only for things to end like this, they'd become the laughingstock of high society.Arthur ignored his mother's attempts to quiet him. His eyes remained fixed on Chloe, demanding an answer. Chloe looked at Arthur's furious expression and let out a cold, mocking laugh. "I don't owe any explanation to someone like you." "So now you're afraid to speak? You did all those shameful things behind my back, but you're not afraid of people finding out? Why not just admit it?" Arthur sneered. "Chloe, I never thought you'd sink this low. Did hitting rock bottom after leaving me drive you to this? If you needed money, you could have just asked. There was no need to degrade yourself like—" "Enough." Joseph's commanding voice cut through the hall. Arthur's words died in his throat. Most guests had already connected the dots. Had Chloe truly betrayed Arthur? And was Joseph involved? After Joseph's stern interruption, complete silence fell over the hall."If I'm not mistaken, you're the CEO of Myers Group, correct, Arthur?" Joseph's tone remained calm but carried undeniable authority. "How is Charles doing? I heard he's been ill and unconscious. Any updates?" Charles was Arthur's grandpa. Madilyn quickly stepped forward, smiling nervously. "Thank you for your concern, Mr. Slade. Charles isn't doing well. The doctors say he may never wake up." Joseph frowned at this news. "Life is unpredictable. He was a good man." Joseph's gaze hardened as he turned back to Arthur. "Young man, I didn't catch everything you said earlier, but I got the main point. Are you accusing me of having an improper relationship with Ms. Lewis? And what, exactly, is your relationship with Ms. Lewis?"
