The Cherished Pet of Nine Beast Husbands

Chapter 387 Calum's Complete Lack of Self-Awareness

Silas felt a tingling sensation on the back of his scalp. He avoided Calum's eyes and turned to Emma. "Emy, why don't you head back to your room and get some rest? I will find a room for the Marshal." He understood that she must feel immense pressure whenever she encountered Calum. He thought, I am genuinely perplexed by the Beast God's decision. Why would it pair a level twelve therian like Calum with Emy? "Mm, thank you," she responded with a nod. She still needed to discuss how to assess Dahlia with Lucien and Marcus, so she made her way back to her room. Calum observed her as she ascended to the third floor. He then inquired of Silas, "Are there any available rooms on the second floor?" "There's a small one at the very end. Would you like it, Marshal?" Silas replied. "Show me," he said. He added, "Since we're both paired with Ms. Tibarn, you don't have to call me Marshal at home. Just call me Calum." As if Silas would dare to do that. This was Calum, who had charged single-handedly into the Chitinid nest and returned unscathed when he was only twenty years old. After the previous Marshal died, he commanded the battlefield with an iron grip. He turned the tide, exterminating tens of millions of Chitinid and pulling their forces back from disaster. He was a legend of war. What could have motivated Calum to venture into Beast God Mountain? Why did every therian within the Empire step aside whenever they noticed him? Because of his unparalleled strength. Silas escorted Calum to the last room on the second floor. The room was indeed on the smaller side. However, they could transform it into something satisfactory with sufficient spatial stone. Calum had no preferences regarding his sleeping arrangements. During Calum's time on Beast God Mountain, he slept behind the Beast God daily without a single complaint. "I'll take this one," he decided. Silas nodded in agreement. "I'll have someone come to improve it for you right away. What kind of style do you desire, Marshal?" He pondered for a moment before stating, "Just replicate Ms. Tibarn's room exactly." Silas was speechless after hearing his words. He thought, Is he being serious? "Silas, let me ask you something…" Calum lowered his voice and looked at him intently. "Ms. Tibarn appeared quite frightened of me a moment ago, didn't she? Am I really that intimidating?" He was speechless again. He thought, How am I supposed to respond to that?Does this man really lack all self-awareness? Calum noticed his silence and raised a hand to feel his own face. He thought, I appear sufficiently attractive, don't I? Perhaps not more appealing than Silas, but certainly not any less. At the very least, we're comparable, right? So what exactly is Ms. Tibarn so frightened of? "Oh, by the way. How many mates does she have at this point? Besides you and Drake, the one I just encountered—who else?" he inquired. In response to his imposing presence, Silas hesitated before replying. "Aside from me… there's also someone you're familiar with, Marshal—Lucien." "Lucien is also her mate?" His eyebrows raised slightly. He recognized that name very well. Lucien was the subordinate he held in the highest regard, the one he'd already envisioned as the next Marshal. He thought, I don't anticipate that both my top commander and my successor are partners with Ms. Tibarn. Ms. Tibarn is certainly unique. He suddenly considered another question and asked, "Who was her first mate? Is it you or Lucien?" He was well aware of his own people. There was no way another individual could have been her first mate with both Lucien and Silas present. At that question, the corner of Silas's mouth twitched. He answered, "Lucien as well." He felt a twinge of sympathy for Lucien. He thought, If Calum doesn't return from Beast God Mountain, then in another couple of years, Lucien is set to ascend as the new Marshal. But now that the Marshal's position is no longer available, who knows if he can even keep his status as the first mate? And going forward in this home… am I supposed to listen to Lucien, or to my superior? Just contemplating it gave him a headache. Calum, on the other hand, wasn't overthinking the situation at all.At that moment, what he desired most was to understand Emma better. "Other than Lucien, who else has been paired with her?" He kept probing. Silas responded, "Individuals you're familiar with, Marshal—Corvin from the Ravaryn, Edric from the Interstellar Hunter Alliance, and the last one is Marcus." He was already acquainted with Corvin and Edric. "Marcus?" As soon as he heard that name, his demeanor turned icy. "You mean that Marcus from the Frostveil Wolf Clan?" he inquired. "Exactly," Silas affirmed, observing his reaction, a sense of confusion settling in his chest. He thought, Why does Calum have such a strong reaction to Marcus's name? Do the two of them share some bad history? He lowered his voice. "Marshal… are you familiar with Marcus?" "I'm familiar with him," Calum managed to say through gritted teeth. Familiar was putting it mildly. He thought, I once clashed with Marcus. I technically win, but it's far from easy—and I still face the consequences. "That old fool Beast God actually paired a walking disaster like him with Ms. Tibarn," he muttered. Calum thought, And even sooner than I do. It's enough to make me boil with rage. Silas stroked his chin after listening to all this and thought, Yeah… There definitely seems to be a lot more going on here.
