Burned Vows

Chapter 1: The Art of Feigned Resistance

Late at night, the Crown Club was at its most lively. The private rooms were bathed in dim, decadent lighting.

“Zhou Dun, that pig-brained fool, actually wants to do business with me? Hah! He thinks just because he threw some money around, he qualifies? If it weren’t for the chance to suppress the Xia family, would I ever sign with that pig?”

Click. A delicate hand pressed down on a phone, stopping a recording. The fingers were long, fair, and graceful.

“Boss Zhou, did you hear that clearly?” The owner of the hand beamed with a radiant smile.

Across from her, Zhou Dun’s face had turned the color of liver under the flickering lights — quite a sight.

“Oh, and one more thing.” Xia Qingkong picked up her phone and opened the photo album, revealing a scandalous photo of a man and woman entangled in a passionate embrace.

Zhou Dun immediately smashed his glass. “Damn it! Someone actually dared seduce my wife?!”

Ten minutes later, Xia Qingkong walked out of the room, waving several signed contracts. Pretending to be a waitress on this trip had paid off handsomely.

She kissed the contracts and folded them carefully, hiding them in her waistband.

The Crown Club uniforms were extremely revealing. Xia Qingkong tugged at the front of her outfit, trying to cover up. Before she could fully adjust, a hand clamped down on her shoulder.

“You. Deliver this wine to 8069,” the overwhelmed manager barked, shoving a tray into her arms.

Xia Qingkong shrugged. A job’s a job. Besides, she was in a great mood — she finally had the contract in hand. What’s a wine delivery?

“8096 or 8069?” she muttered, walking down the hallway and scanning the room numbers carefully, wine tray in hand.

She tried calling the front desk, but the line was busy. Left with no choice, she had to try each room one by one.

“Whatever, I’ll just pick one.”

She knocked on the door of 8069. Hearing nothing, she pushed it open gently.

“Ah!” Xia Qingkong gasped at the sight inside. “Sorry, I’m so sorry, sir…”

Though the lighting wasn’t bright, she clearly saw a man pressing a scantily dressed woman down on a sofa.

When the door opened, both turned their heads toward her.

She could see the woman’s disheveled hair, flushed face, and a plunging neckline that revealed way too much — it was an embarrassing scene.

“Stop right there!”

Xia Qingkong was about to shut the door and leave when the man’s cold voice halted her.

Mu Chenhao pried the woman’s hands from around his neck and narrowed his eyes at Xia Qingkong, his presence exuding danger.

“So, this is the stunt you’re pulling?” Mu Chenhao sat up and looked at her coldly.

“Sir, you’ve got it all wrong. I don’t even know her,” Xia Qingkong quickly explained. She knew the Crown Club was filled with powerful people — not the place to start trouble. She just wanted to deliver the wine and leave.

“You took a photo? Hand over your phone.”

Xia Qingkong realized her hand was still in the position from trying to call the front desk…

Crap! He must think she was trying to blackmail him with a photo of his affair!

What a sleaze — scared of being exposed, huh? Looked all polished and handsome, but turns out to be just another scumbag, she thought bitterly.

“Sir, it’s a misunderstanding. I didn’t take any pictures.”

Though disgusted inside, she tried to appease him. Her phone still had compromising photos of Zhou Dun’s wife — she couldn’t let this guy see them.

Mu Chenhao was now convinced the two women were working together — one seducing, the other snapping photos for blackmail.

“Who sent you?”

His voice was cold and menacing. Xia Qingkong was getting frustrated. Was she really being accused no matter what?

“I came on my own,” she answered instinctively, then, seeing the strange look from the woman on the sofa, added, “You saw it yourself, sir. I’m just a humble waitress. I still have other rooms to serve.”

“Cut the crap. Give me your phone.”

Mu Chenhao ignored her pleas and looked her over from head to toe before speaking again.

Xia Qingkong was speechless. Paranoid much? If he was so afraid of scandals, why come to a place like this?

“I…”

“Not you. Get out.”

“I’m going, I’m going…” Xia Qingkong was about to bolt.

“I wasn’t talking to you,” Mu Chenhao snapped, his voice chilling. He turned his head slightly, his gaze sharp as ice.

The woman on the sofa adjusted her top, revealing even more skin that made Xia Qingkong avert her eyes.

“Mu Shao…” the woman whined, her tone soft and seductive. But Mu Chenhao’s icy stare made her shrink back, too afraid to move.

Before leaving, she shot a venomous glare at Xia Qingkong.

Xia Qingkong was baffled. What the hell is going on?

“I’m just a server!” she reminded nervously.

Mu Chenhao sneered, “The Crown’s ‘servers’ aren’t just here to pour drinks, are they?”

That made Xia Qingkong fume. So now he was implying she was some kind of escort?

She angrily picked up the tray to leave — but before she could take two steps, she was yanked back hard. The red wine spilled across the floor, shattering into pieces.

Oh no. That bottle probably cost tens of thousands!

“You lunatic!” Xia Qingkong was furious now.

Mu Chenhao didn’t care. He shoved her down onto the sofa.

Her body was pinned down, and she struggled in outrage, trying to push him off.

“This is what you came for, isn’t it? Since you’re already here, don’t blame me for being rude.”

“What do you mean ‘we’? Are you insane?!” Xia Qingkong fought back, but her wrists were pinned above her head.

“Let go of me, you shameless jerk!”

Unable to free her hands, she opened her mouth to bite him — only for Mu Chenhao to firmly press down and completely immobilize her.

He thought she and the other woman were in this together to entrap him?

“Wait, wait! Just listen to me for a sec—”

Xia Qingkong tried to explain between gasps, but Mu Chenhao didn’t care. Feeling her soft body beneath him, her warmth and scent intoxicated him.

His mind blanked for a moment. Feeling the smoothness of her skin under his palm, he lowered his head and kissed her lips.

“Ah!”

Xia Qingkong gasped in shock, feeling the warmth of his lips against hers.

This shameless man!

She tried to bite down, but he skillfully dodged, deepening the kiss.

Just as she was about to lose her breath and her whole body flushed with heat, a cold sentence snapped her back to reality like a bucket of ice water:

“That woman just now was all over me. But you — why are you pretending to resist now?”
