Pampered By Billionaires After Betrayal

Chapter 405 Things Change

The next few hours felt like a battlefield. Quickly processing documents, booking tickets, getting through security, finding the boarding gate—it was all a whirlwind. Steven almost had to drag Emily along at a half-run. By the time they finally reached the gate, the cabin doors were just about to close. They managed to get on the plane at the very last moment. Steven let out a breath of relief. "Miranda, it really hasn’t been easy getting you here." The flight had no first-class tickets left, so they ended up in economy class. The legroom was extremely cramped, and the space felt tight. To make matters worse, next to Emily sat a rowdy young boy, around ten years old. He kept climbing up and down, unable to sit still for a moment. Several times, he stepped on Emily's feet, leaving smudgy footprints on her dress. Emily sat in the middle, with Steven by the aisle. Seeing the situation, Steven immediately stood up. "Miranda, why don’t we swap seats?" Emily didn’t object. Her dress was an expensive piece, costing over ten thousand euros. She switched to the aisle seat, buckled her seatbelt, and watched as the plane slowly began to taxi and eventually took off, the view outside turning into a sea of white clouds. "Miranda, did you grow up in England?" Steven asked, sounding casual. Emily’s expression remained indifferent. "...Yes." Emily asked the flight attendant for a blanket, covering herself and closing her eyes as if to nap. "Steven, there's no need to probe on behalf of your boss. If he wants to know something, he can ask me himself." So there was a story here. Steven nodded, "Actually, I’m just curious. You must be extremely capable if the boss is this eager to meet you in person." "My abilities were already proven at the award ceremony, Steven. Maybe you should catch up on some homework," Emily replied coolly. Steven chuckled awkwardly, scratching his nose. "You’re right, of course. I’ve been so busy adjusting to my new position that I haven’t had time to catch up on the Pritzker Architecture Prize ceremony. I heard you became famous overnight there?" "I became known for my design, not the award ceremony." Steven gave a sheepish smile. "Miranda, it feels like you don’t like me." "No, not really.""Then why are you friendly to Adam, but cold to me? Is it just because I’m Mr. Norman's assistant?" Emily frowned slightly and slowly opened her eyes. "Steven." "Yes?" "You’re very different from Dylan." "Oh, really?" "Yes. Dylan didn’t talk as much as you do, and he certainly wasn’t this curious." Steven spread his hands. "That’s because he’s been with Mr. Norman for over ten years. He knows everything, so there’s nothing left to be curious about. I’m still new, and to serve my boss better, I need to understand him more." Emily turned her head to look at him. "How long have you been in your position?" "Just hit three years." "Were you always part of the Great Wall Group?" She seemed genuinely curious, trying to recall if she’d ever seen him before during her time there. "No, I wasn't. I’ve only been out of college for two years. I started working with the Great Wall Group during my senior year, doing internships. The company even paid for my tuition, helping me until I graduated. After that, it was natural for me to join them. I was very fortunate that, on the day I received my degree, Dylan informed me that I’d be taking over his position and directly working for the CEO." Emily nodded, realizing Steven had likely joined after she had already left for the UK, which explained why she hadn’t seen him before. "Who’s in charge of the design department now?" "Ken is the head now." Ken? He'd managed to become the head of the design department? "What about Daniel?" "Daniel is now Vice President." Steven silently noted that his suspicions were likely true. This Miranda clearly had unresolved ties to Mr. Norman if she knew the senior staff of the company in such detail. Emily didn’t seem bothered by his probing gaze or questions. She lived her life openly—there was nothing to hide. Even if Mr. Norman uncovered her true identity, what would it change? She didn’t owe him anything, not after the loss of her child and nearly her own life. What she found remarkable was how much could change in just three years. She had transformed, but so had those she had left behind in the States. Everyone had evolved, but would they still be the same people she once knew when they met again? "Steven, I haven’t kept up with things in the States for a while. Could you catch me up a bit?" Emily asked. "Of course. What would you like to know?" "How about... entertainment news? Is Lucas still popular?" she asked casually. Steven looked a bit surprised but answered truthfully. "Very popular. More so than when he first debuted. He just announced he’s got a girlfriend, and rumor has it they’re planning to get married soon. Considering his fame, getting married at the peak of his career is quite a bold move—very much like the rock star he is." "Who is his girlfriend?" she inquired further. "Not entirely sure—she’s a regular person, not a celebrity." Emily nodded, falling silent once more. "Miranda, are you still interested in the entertainment world?" Steven asked. "Just asking." After a moment, she continued, "What about Logan Morgan? He’s won the Pritzker before, hasn’t he?" Steven let out a derisive snort. "Oh, Logan Morgan, yes. He’s practically the disgrace of the architectural world, especially among the American community. He’s notorious now, with most companies that worked with him filing lawsuits to recover damages. Last I heard, he’s completely broke, in massive debt, and currently working as a security guard at some hotel." Emily was visibly taken aback. "A security guard?" "Yes, let me think... It’s the Hilton Hotel in New York City, if I’m not mistaken. He works as a guard there." Emily let out a cold laugh. The once proud and vain Logan Morgan had ended up as a security guard? And at the very same hotel where her uncle had worked? It seemed karma really did come full circle. "He's doing really badly now. Even his son disowned him." "What happened to his son?" Emily asked. "He got caught stealing and ended up in juvenile detention—still hasn’t been released."
