Chapter 68 Would She Listen if I Said So?

"Are you feeling unwell?" Hugo asked softly. Darcy shook her head, her lips alarmingly pale. "I'm okay. I should go." But as she turned, dizziness washed over her. She stumbled. "Careful!" A broad hand steadied her waist in time. Hugo frowned. "Let me take you to the hospital." "No need," Darcy said, pulling away weakly. "It's not a big issue." Hugo's frown deepened. So stubborn. Even in this state, she's being formal with me. He stepped forward and grasped her wrist. "Your health comes first. I know you want to keep your distance because of Zane, but don't take risks with your body. Get in the car. I'm taking you to the hospital." Darcy struggled. Hugo held firm. Darcy felt exasperated. How was she supposed to tell him it was just menstrual cramps, not an illness? "Hugo, be a gentleman!" Gwen chided from the side. "Darcy has period pain." Hugo froze, releasing her hand instantly. What's period pain? Gwen rolled her eyes, her tone full of disdain. "No wonder Uncle and Aunt keep setting you up on blind dates. How old are you and still don't know about period pain? It's menstrual cramps. Darcy's on her period!" The moment the words were out, a blush crept onto Hugo's cheeks. He remembered how he'd just dragged Darcy, insisting on the hospital. Yeah, that had been awkward as hell. Darcy also felt embarrassed. It was the first time she'd discussed this in front of a man she barely knew. And that man was her ex-boyfriend's close friend. "Um, I'm gonna go," Darcy said, holding her stomach as she turned to leave. But Hugo called her back. "Wait a moment. I'll be right back," he said. Then he patted Gwen's head. "Help her to the car and wait for me." With that, he dashed off like the wind. Gwen was obedient. "Darcy, let's sit in the car. It's windy out here." "No need." She was afraid of dirtying Hugo's car. "It's fine. I have a thin scarf in my bag. Let's just sit for a bit. If Hugo comes back and sees I didn't listen, he's gonna chew me out," Gwen wheedled. Helpless, Darcy had to comply and sit in the back seat. It was indeed much warmer inside the car.Five minutes later, Hugo ran back, slightly out of breath, holding a paper bag. Darcy and Gwen got out to meet him. "Here, take this." He handed the bag to Darcy. Darcy guessed its contents. She pressed her lips together and looked up at him. "Thank you." "You're welcome." Hugo patted Gwen's shoulder. "Let's get going." Once in the car, Gwen pouted and muttered under her breath, "No wonder you're single!" "What are you mumbling about me?" Hugo glanced at her in the rearview mirror with a faint smile. Gwen spoke in a wise, grown-up tone, "You should have offered to drive Darcy home. You knew she was in pain, and you just left her there." "Would she listen if I said so?" "At least say it. Show some effort."Hugo gave a light laugh. "She wouldn't." He understood Darcy. Their past connection was entirely tied to Zane. Now that she and Zane had broken up, she was avoiding any association with him. Why would she get in his car? If it weren't for her cramps today, she wouldn't even have sat in his car for those few minutes. Soon, they arrived at the Sterling residence. Gwen got out, then suddenly exclaimed, "Oh!" "What's wrong?" Hugo unbuckled and opened the rear door. Gwen held up a small teddy bear keychain. She remembered. This was attached to Darcy's backpack! It must have fallen off when she sat down. "Give it to me." Hugo also realized whose it was. "No need to trouble yourself. Darcy and I agreed to study together at the library next week. I'll return it then," Gwen said.Hugo's lips pressed together slightly, his eyes flickering. "I'll return it. She might need it. Waiting a week is a bit long." "Oh, okay. Here." Gwen didn't argue. She just didn't understand. What was the rush for a keychain? She waved goodbye to her cousin. Hugo waved back. "I'll pick you up next week." Huh? While Gwen stood there dumbfounded, the G-Class turned and drove away. Gwen's mother came out, seeing her daughter standing there, stunned. She shook her daughter's arm. "Did you trouble your cousin again? We have a driver at home. Have him pick you up next time. Hugo is very busy with work. Don't keep bothering him." Gwen frowned. "It wasn't me! He insisted on picking me up." Gwen's mother was stunned. Since when did these two get so close? I didn't even know.... By the time Darcy got home, her stomach pain had completely subsided. She took a hot shower, changed into pajamas, and lay down on her bed. The bag Hugo had given her contained painkillers, a bottle of water, and sanitary products. She had taken one pill right there.
