Chapter 412 Were They Really a Couple?

Darcy was starving. She didn't know how many days it had been since she last ate, but the moment she got the bacon roll, she devoured it in a few large bites. Watching her, Lucian felt a strange pang. He wordlessly offered her his own roll. She accepted with a smile and finished that one too. Once she was full, color seemed to return to her cheeks. She felt a surge of energy and wanted to get out of bed, but her legs felt like jelly. The doctor said it would take a few days for her strength to fully return. She glanced at Lucian, who was standing by the window, his back to her. She wanted to call out to him but felt awkward. Were they really a couple? Why did he feel like such a stranger? Oh, right. The amnesia. But shouldn't she have some instinctive feeling, even with amnesia?"Need something? Want to get up?" Lucian turned, noticing her struggling to sit up. "The weather looks nice. I'd like to go outside for a bit," Darcy said. Lucian brought a wheelchair to the bedside, then gently scooped her up and settled her into it. "I'll take you. Some fresh air will do you good. Your legs are fine, just weak. Sunlight will help." Outside, the sun was brilliant, the temperature pleasant. Other patients and their families were enjoying the hospital grounds. The warm sunlight felt wonderful on her skin. Darcy closed her eyes, savoring it, but a wave of guilt washed over her. How could I have thrown away a world with such beautiful sunlight in it? What was I thinking? Being alive is wonderful! Her gaze drifted to Lucian, who was standing a short distance away, still on his phone. Ah. No wonder we fought.A workaholic. In the short time since they'd come outside, he'd taken two calls and sent several messages. His hands hadn't stopped. Guess I couldn't stand that work was more important than me, so I tried to prove my worth by jumping. It sounded terribly dramatic and immature, even to her own mind. Darcy decided she should apologize. She maneuvered her wheelchair carefully behind him, planning to speak as soon as he hung up. "Book a flight to Londyn for this afternoon," Lucian was saying, his voice low and decisive. Darcy's eyes widened. One ticket? What did that mean? Was he leaving her? Her chest tightened with a sudden, sharp hurt. How could he be so heartless? My legs aren't even fully healed, and he's already planning to dump me?He wants to break up? Hmph. What a cold man! Lucian finally finished his call and turned, startling when he found Darcy right behind him. Before he could speak, she fired off a question, her voice icy. "So, you're planning to abandon me here? Leave me to fend for myself?" Lucian was taken aback. He blinked, his mind struggling to connect her words to the situation. "What?" Darcy was furious, her temper flaring. "You just told your assistant to book one ticket to Londyn for this afternoon! One ticket! You're going, and I'm staying here? Don't even think about leaving me behind! No way!" Lucian stared, a strange, surreal feeling washing over him. For a disorienting second, it felt like she was throwing a possessive, jealous tantrum at him. He was at a loss for words. "I—You—" "Stop stammering! Tell your assistant to book a ticket for me, too! Right now!" Her voice was quick, sharp, laced with anger and an urgent demand. Acting purely on instinct, Lucian hit redial. "Yeah, make that two tickets." He suddenly remembered the critical issue. "The second passenger has no passport. Figure something out." He hung up decisively, cutting off the inevitable protest from the other end. Darcy gave a satisfied nod. That's more like it. But a new problem hit Lucian. Lucian crouched down, bringing his eyes level with hers, his gaze serious. "When I found you, I didn't check properly. Do you have any contact information for your family on you? Anything at all?" Darcy shook her head. "No. I checked everything this morning. There's nothing." She frowned, troubled. How had she gotten here? Why didn't she have anything on her? Or did it all wash away after she jumped?Either way, it screamed reckless. She sighed inwardly, resolving never be so reckless again. From now on, stay calm. Think things through. Lucian pressed his lips together. He didn't have Ione's contact information. He could ask his uncle to look into it, but he had a flight that afternoon. He didn't have time to wait—and he sure as hell wasn't leaving Darcy alone. After a moment of internal debate, Lucian made a decision. He would take Darcy to Londyn with him. They could figure everything out once they were there. The plane touched down in Londyn as full darkness settled over the city. Unlike Aethelburg, Londyn was damp and chilly. A shiver ran through Darcy as they exited the terminal. Seeing this, Lucian immediately shrugged off his jacket and draped it over her shoulders. "Careful, don't catch a chill. Your body is still recovering."Darcy blinked up at him, murmuring a soft "thanks." A warm, comforting feeling spread through her chest. He's not so bad. He cares for me. A taxi pulled up. Lucian stowed the folded wheelchair, then carefully helped Darcy into the back seat before sliding in beside her. The driver, catching their reflection in his rearview mirror—the solicitous care, the close proximity—smiled broadly. "You two just back from a holiday, yeah? How was it? Must've been brilliant, I bet?"
