Everything Stolen, I Left to Become CEO

Chapter 396 A No-Go

I brought Jeremy here, and he asks which son? Isn't it obvious? Cedric said slowly, "Indeed, in terms of age, Zephyr would be the best match for Cindy. But Zephyr is always busy with work; even I rarely see him. Even if he had a girlfriend, I doubt he'd know how to care for her properly. Jeremy is older than Cindy, but that's good. He knows how to treat a woman right. What do you think?" Arthur set down his cup and examined Jeremy more carefully. Jeremy had that classic old-school official vibe—handsome, distinguished, but carrying an air of authority from long being in a position of power. His granddaughter was lively, playful, and impulsive. She needed someone complementary to temper her. But remembering his afternoon call with his eldest grandson, he hesitated. Jethro was so resistant to his interference in his love life. Cindy might also throw a fit if he meddled in her marriage. Nowadays, Arthur just wanted the family to be safe and harmonious. After a beat, Arthur said, "I'll still need to ask Cindy and Clara what they want." Cedric had thought Arthur could make the decision outright, settling the marriage for the children. After all, many had witnessed Arthur's iron-fisted methods in his youth. He hadn't expected him to become so hesitant. "But—" Cedric started to say more, but a look from Jeremy stopped him. "Sorry to trouble you, Mr. Blackwood," Jeremy said respectfully. "Marriage requires mutual consent. Of course, Cindy's wishes should be respected." Arthur's eyes brightened, looking at Jeremy with some appreciation. After they left the estate, Cedric couldn't help but complain, "Why did you stop me? I wanted Arthur to settle it alone, so we don't drag this out and lose our shot." Jeremy sighed. His father was getting on in years and couldn't see things as clearly. "Dad, Arthur isn't the man he was in his youth. After the recognition banquet incident, he values family harmony above all. And as he ages, he only wishes for peace within the family." Cedric was taken aback. "What are you implying?" Jeremy looked out the window. The days were getting colder, dusk arriving earlier. It was only around 5 PM, yet the sky was already tinted with dark hues. He said lightly, "Probably a no-go." Cedric fell silent. Neither spoke further. Just as they were feeling down about the likely failure of their plan, they heard voices in the living room as soon as they arrived home. Cedric and Jeremy entered, a servant handing them slippers.Only then did they see Cindy was also there! Cedric was momentarily stunned, then his face broke into a smile. "Cindy! What brings you to visit us today?" Cindy stood up, greeting him. "Hello, Cedric Mr. Knight." She then looked at Jeremy. "Hello, Mr. Jeremy Knight." "Just call him by his name. You always call Zephyr by his name, don't you?" Cedric chuckled heartily. He looked up and saw Zephyr had also returned, sitting on the sofa. Cedric's expression immediately turned stern. "Why are you back today?" Doris, seeing his quick change of face, shot him a displeased look. "What kind of talk is that? Most parents wish their children would visit more. You, on the other hand, aren't even happy to see your son home?" Cedric, while motioning for Cindy to sit, said dismissively, "It's not that I'm unhappy. I'm just surprised. You're always overthinking." Jeremy handed his coat to a servant and turned to sit down, only to see Cindy sitting right next to Zephyr. His brow furrowed slightly. He couldn't help but recall where Cindy usually sat when she visited in the past. Cedric sat down, all smiles towards Cindy, asking about her work lately and how her family was. Cindy answered each question politely and sweetly. Cedric grew even more delighted. Arthur said Cindy was wild and unfocused. Looking at her now, that's not true at all. She's a polite, well-behaved girl. If she could marry Jeremy, that would be perfect. She refused before because she hadn't seen Jeremy's qualities. Tonight is the perfect chance for her to witness them. Cedric checked his watch and called to the kitchen, "What time is dinner?" Doris said with mild reproach, "We just started. It'll be at least an hour."Zephyr had decided to come home last-minute, so several main dishes hadn't been prepped in advance, hence the longer wait. This suited Cedric perfectly. He turned to Cindy with a smile. "Perfect. While we wait, let Jeremy show you around the garden. You haven't been here in a while. The garden was renovated this summer, with lots of new flowers planted." Cindy's eyes widened in surprise. She instinctively glanced at Zephyr, whose face darkened. Meanwhile, Jeremy, having finished adjusting his cuff, stood up, his tall frame looking down at Cindy with gentle eyes. "Shall we? Let me show you around." He began to lead the way but suddenly heard a low, firm voice from behind.
