Everything Stolen, I Left to Become CEO

Chapter 379 I Refuse to Take the Blame for It

Jenna's eyes bugged out. "Five thousand dollars? Are you out of your mind? That's robbery!" Darcy said coolly, "Fine. Then we pull the footage and call the police. Let's see how they handle it." She had just pulled out her phone when Annie shot Jenna a meaningful look. Jenna said, reluctantly, "Fine, fine! We'll pay! Is this little thing even worth calling the cops over? You elites love wasting police resources." With that, Jenna took out her phone and slowly, grudgingly, transferred the money to Darcy. Darcy couldn't be bothered with her any longer. She took Cindy and Gwen by the arms and led them away. Meanwhile, Annie turned to Jenna with gratitude. "Thank you, Jenna. If it weren't for you just now, I honestly wouldn't know what to do."Jenna waved a hand. "Don't mention it. We're family." Annie lowered her head and transferred 50 thousand dollars to Jenna. Even after deducting the five thousand owed, that left a hefty sum. Then she said to Jenna, "I just remembered an urgent call I have to make. Could you take Jett shopping? Get him whatever he likes. If it's not enough, let me know." Jenna's eyes lit up. She knew helping her cousin was always worth it. Though a thought flickered—Annie didn't have a job, yet she could throw around 50 grand just like that. Jasper must be treating hervery well. A sliver of jealousy crept into Jenna's heart, but it was quickly replaced by glee as she scooped up Jett. "No problem! You make your call. I've got him." Two minutes later, Annie went to the women's restroom and dialed Jasper's number. When the call connected, she didn't speak, just sobbed uncontrollably. Jasper grew frantic. "Annie, don't cry. Tell me where you are. I'll come get you." Hearing he wanted to come, Annie immediately stopped him, her voice choked. "No, don't. It's not that big of a deal." "Then tell me what happened!" "Nothing, really. I was just at the mall with Jett buying clothes and... we ran into Ms. Gale. We had a bit of a spat." She left it at that. On the other end of the line, Jasper's breathing grew uneven, his voice tight with anger. "I see." "Jasper," Annie said quickly, "I called you for no other reason. You're the only friend I have in this country. I just needed to talk to someone. Please don't do anything rash because of me, okay?" Jasper's voice softened, soothing her, "Don't worry. I won't. By the way, I had Dr. Archer mail your medication. I'll bring it to your hotel later." Annie fell silent. Jasper continued coaxing, "Be good. You still need to take your meds. This time, I specifically asked Dr. Archer to lower the dosage. It won't be as hard on you." "Thank you, Jasper." "No need to be polite with me. See you soon." Meanwhile, Jenna took Jett around the mall. She spotted a women's clothing store having a sale—a brand she'd coveted for ages but could never afford. Remembering the sudden windfall in her account, Jenna decided to indulge. But she had a little tagalong with her. She frowned in annoyance. A sales associate, noticing her dilemma, had a bright idea. "Ma'am, you go ahead and try things on. I'll keep an eye on the little one for you." Jenna happily headed for the fitting rooms. Just then, several more customers entered the store, and the sales associate hurried over to assist them.A small rubber ball rolled to a stop at Jett's feet. Curious, he picked it up, looking left and right. Whose is this? A strange man walked up to him. "Hello there, buddy. That's my ball. Thank you for picking it up." "Okay." Jett handed the ball over, polite as ever. The man smiled and patted his head. "Good boy." With that, he turned and walked away briskly. Jett frowned, reaching up to touch the back of his head. A faint ache lingered there. That's weird. Did that man pull my hair? Why does it hurt? The next day at work, Darcy met with Zephyr's team in the conference room to discuss the on-premise deployment plans for the AI project.Their victory at the FinTech Innovation Challenge had put Stratagem Tech's AI product in the spotlight, and clients were lining up. The conference room door was suddenly shoved open. Everyone froze, turning towards the entrance in confusion. Darcy looked over and met Jasper's cold gaze. Her heart sank. This is not good. He's here for me. Sure enough, the next second, Jasper waved a hand. "Everyone else, out. Darcy, you stay." Zephyr shot Darcy a worried look. She gave him a small, reassuring nod. Two minutes later, only the two of them remained in the room. Darcy raised an eyebrow. "Mr. Blackwood, anything you need?" Jasper's expression was icy. He tossed a file across the table towards her.Darcy reached for it and opened it. It was a formal complaint letter. The project manager from Aethelburg Bank was complaining that she had been unresponsive, dismissive, and had yelled at the client during her last on-site visit. Darcy almost laughed. She closed the file after reading just two lines. "Mr. Blackwood, this complaint is false. I refuse to take the blame for it." "Are you suggesting the client is lying, deliberately framing you?"
