Everything Stolen, I Left to Become CEO

Chapter 36 Simp

Darcy packed her things, ready to head home. Looking up, she saw Jethro with his long legs casually crossed, leisurely reading a book. Out of politeness, she still asked, "Want to walk out together?" Jethro smiled and said, "Sure. But it's still early. How about a walk around the field?" "Sounds good," Darcy replied. On the field, a basketball game had just ended. A stream of spectators was pouring out. Darcy was accidentally bumped, her body tilting backwards. "Careful," a voice said. A large, warm hand steadied her slender waist just in time. Darcy looked up, seeing his clean jawline. A faint, uniquely masculine woody scent reached her nose, and her heartbeat stuttered oddly for a moment. "Thanks, I'm fine," she said, straightening up. Her heart was still pounding erratically. She quietly put some distance between them, lowering her head and walking quickly ahead. Jethro lowered his gaze, staring at his right hand. A soft, lingering sensation transmitted from his palm through his entire body, a tingling warmth that refused to fade. He shook his hand slightly and strode forward. ... Ines thought he was seeing things. But the longer he looked, the more that woman's back looked like Darcy's. But who was the man next to her? It was definitely not his buddy, Zane. And the man had just held her steady. That was way too intimate! Then again, he reconsidered. How could Darcy, that hopelessly devoted girl, ever cheat? He took a photo and sent it to their three-person group chat.Ines typed, "Zane, take a look. Is this your simp or not?" Hugo replied faster than Zane, "If you can't talk like a decent human being, shut your damn mouth! 'Simp' this, 'simp' that—what the hell are you then? Lemme guess why you're at Quest University. You're probably chasing after some pretty freshman, playing the simp yourself!" The uploaded photo happened to show a group of students wearing oversized t-shirts with "Quest U Basketball Finals" printed on the front. So there was no need to guess why Ines was on campus. His taste had never changed over the years—still into college girls. Ines was left speechless, angrily sending a meme of a cartoon dog holding a knife threateningly. Hugo fired back with his own meme without hesitation. The group chat instantly devolved into a meme war.It was a long while before Zane saw the messages. It was Saturday. He was working from home. After finishing his emails, he noticed the group chat had over a hundred notifications. He scrolled up, skimming through the messages until he found the first picture Ines had posted. He zoomed in with two fingers. The familiar back made his finger pause on the screen. And overlapping that familiar figure was clearly a man—a man holding a woman from behind. Darcy... hugging a stranger? Zane stood up abruptly. No. Impossible! Like Hugo, Zane also noticed the students in basketball gear. He let out a long, slow breath of relief. Right—wrong person. There was no way Darcy would be at Quest University. Her mother had just been discharged from the hospital. Darcy, ever the dutiful daughter, wouldn't leave her mother's side to go on a campus date. And besides— Zane tugged at the top two buttons of his shirt, letting himself breathe more easily. Darcy only has eyes for me. She won't spare a glance at any other man, no matter how impressive. After seven years together, Zane was confident about that. He typed a reply and tagged Ines, "Bad eyesight. My Darcy doesn't look like that, and she wouldn't be at Quest U." Ines shot back, "'My Darcy'? Ugh, that's sickeningly sweet!" Ignoring the jab, Zane added, "Drinks tonight? Need to pick your brain about something." "About what?" Ines asked. "How to make it up to a woman," Zane replied."!!!" Ines sent. That message didn't just shock Ines. Hugo was equally stunned! "Darcy? You need to make it up to Darcy?" Ines pressed. "Yeah," Zane confirmed. Hugo, watching from the sidelines, raised an eyebrow. Well, this is a surprise. Eager to stir the pot, he typed, "I'm dying to know what you did to actually make Darcy mad." While Hugo thought Ines calling Darcy "simp" was too harsh, everyone had seen how excessively devoted she was to Zane. Maybe not exactly a simp, but close. "I told her we needed to cancel the engagement for now," Zane explained. "She hasn't contacted me since. Doesn't reply to my messages." "..." Hugo responded. "..." Ines echoed.Ines broke out in a cold sweat. He typed, "Okay, I admit I was too harsh on Darcy before. But what you did, man... how do I even put this? Telling a girl you're canceling the engagement is pretty much the same as breaking up in her book!" Zane's frown deepened as he read. "It's that serious?" he typed back. Ines was at a loss. "In my experience, unless you have a damn good reason, it's basically impossible to fix." He added a moment later, "But considering Darcy's... tendencies, I'd say you still have a shot. Club tonight." "Alright," Zane agreed. Meanwhile, Hugo stared at his phone, unable to process it for a long time. Zane had canceled his engagement to Darcy. Because of Zora? Recently, the whole social circle had been buzzing about the Moss and Blackwood family alliance falling through.Honestly, comparing the two women... while Zora was more accomplished on paper, it was obvious Darcy was the one who truly suited Zane.
