Everything Stolen, I Left to Become CEO
She rolled her eyes. Like hell she'd tell him. Hugo's brows were drawn low, his whole body radiating cold intensity. "Tell me. What happened to Darcy?" Ines was startled. It was the first time he'd seen Hugo so angry. Zephyr held Cindy tighter, giving Hugo a cool look. "Mr. Sterling, watch your tone. We have no obligation to inform you." Hugo ran his tongue over his teeth, then strode to the front desk. "What just happened?" His aura was overpowering, filled with a chilling cold. The receptionist shrank back. "I-I think someone hiking went missing. A gentleman took an umbrella to look for them..." Before she could finish, Hugo snatched the umbrella from her hands and dashed into the rain."Hugo!" Ines tried to stop him, but it was too late. Watching his desperate retreating back, Ines cursed under his breath. Damn. Hugo's feelings for Darcy are deeper than I thought! Otherwise, he wouldn't panic like this just hearing she's in trouble. Ugh, what a mess! Turning around, he saw Zane and Zora standing behind him, having appeared at some point. Zane frowned. "What's Hugo doing rushing into the rain?" "He—" Ines was momentarily speechless. Can't say he's going to look for your ex, can I? Their friendship spanned over a decade. He couldn't let it be ruined over a woman. Ines made up his mind—no way he was telling Zane. He forced a smile and lied, "Hugo said he hadn't taken a walk in the rain in ages. Wanted to feel it." Zane didn't doubt it. He knew Hugo was a romantic at heart; walking in the rain was exactly the kind of thing he'd do. Zora, however, snorted disdainfully. Darcy huddled in a small cave, soaked through. When she'd slipped, she'd spotted this little cave and scrambled inside to take shelter. The temperature on the mountain was lower. She was shivering uncontrollably. But the cave was empty. She could only pray the rain would stop soon. Otherwise, she couldn't risk going out. The height was awkward—too high to easily go up, too steep to safely go down. After half an hour, the rain outside lightened slightly but hadn't stopped. Standing at the cave entrance, Darcy felt a wave of panic. Does everyone know I'm trapped? If they do, they must be worried. Looking at her phone in her bag—waterlogged and dead—she couldn't contact anyone. Wait a bit longer. If the rain doesn't stop before dark, I'll have to risk going down. Exhausted from the ordeal, Darcy leaned against the cave wall and fell asleep on the ground. She didn't know how long she slept before a rustling sound woke her. Alert, she peered outside. Please don't be some wild animal. She immediately remembered documentaries about mountain animals hunting at dusk... Her heart leaped into her throat. She gripped her meager possessions—a canvas bag and half a bottle of water.Fighting off a wild animal would be impossible. Crouching by the entrance, she peeked out carefully and saw something resembling a human figure. She breathed a sigh of relief. Not an animal. A person. Looking closer, Darcy froze. It was— Jethro! He came for her! Darcy was so stunned she forgot to breathe. In the rain, Jethro still wore his casual clothes, holding a large umbrella, looking around. But his usually calm, composed face was etched with anxiety. The wind blew the rain, soaking his clothes, but he didn't seem to care. His eyes swept the area, finally meeting Darcy's gaze from within the cave. Jethro's heart clenched. Without a second thought, he strode toward the cave. His steps were hurried. Darcy watched, heart in her throat, calling out, "Watch your step on the rocks!" Within minutes, Jethro was before her. "Are you hurt?" Closing the umbrella, Jethro took two steps forward, grasping her shoulders, looking her over. The concern in his voice was unmistakable. Darcy was momentarily dazed, then shyly crossed her arms over her chest. Soaked, her fitted athletic wear clung to her body, accentuating her curves... Jethro saw it too. His Adam's apple bobbed hard. He turned away fast, pulled off his jacket, and handed it to her. "Put this on. Don't catch a cold."There was no need for politeness now. Darcy took the jacket. "Thank you." The jacket hung huge and awkward on her, but warmth rushed in at once. A clean, subtle scent—his—curled into her nose. Her panic ebbed in a heartbeat. Her eyelashes fluttered as she looked at Jethro. "How did you find me here?"
