Chapter 145 Why Not Try Again?

"And this is—" Zephyr began, but before he could finish, Jethro pushed him back inside and shut the door with a firm thud. Inside, Zephyr rubbed his nose. Okay then. When Jethro looked up again, the woman at the doorway was long gone. He remembered her saying she wasn't trying to seduce him. His mouth couldn't help but curl. Honestly, if she had been, he wouldn't have minded. Darcy practically fled to the women's pool. She arrived just as Cindy walked in from another direction. Seeing her slightly breathless, cheeks flushed, Cindy looked concerned. "What's wrong? Do you have a fever?" Embarrassed, Darcy thought quickly. "No, the water's just a bit too hot.""Is it? Let me check." Cindy got in. "Hmm, feels fine to me." "Oh. Maybe I need to adjust." As she spoke, Darcy took off the robe she'd been wrapped in. In her haste to escape, she hadn't noticed it before, but now, calmer, she caught the scent of sandalwood on it. It was... Jethro's scent. Instantly, her mind replayed the image of him shirtless, smooth skin, defined muscles... She successfully made her face flush again. "Wow! I knew that swimsuit would look amazing on you! You look stunning! Even I'm falling for you!" Cindy exclaimed. "Whoa, you look slim, but you've got curves!" There was no mirror. Darcy could only see her reflection in the water. It was very sexy, a style she'd never tried before. But the thought of appearing like that in front of Jethro...So embarrassed. After the hot springs, as dusk fell, Darcy and Cindy got dressed and headed up the mountain. At the summit was a villa for guests. Cindy told her, "We're staying here tonight." She said "we." Darcy had a bad feeling. She paused. Sure enough, looking up, she saw Jethro and Zephyr standing at the villa's entrance. Darcy was so embarrassed she could have dug a hole. She avoided looking at Jethro, instantly shifting her gaze away the moment their eyes met. Fortunately, Jethro seemed to have brushed off the afternoon's incident. His expression was as calm and detached as ever. Rolling up his sleeves as he came from the kitchen, he looked at the two women on the sofa. "What would you like to eat? Zephyr and I will cook."Huh? Having the boss cook for her didn't seem right. Darcy stood up. "I can cook too. Let me help." "It's fine. We've got it. Any preferences?" Jethro clearly didn't intend to let her help. Cindy laughed and explained, "My brother is a great cook. Goes with the territory—everyone who studies abroad becomes a chef." Darcy was surprised. Weren't wealthy heirs supposed to take servants and private chefs when they studied abroad? As if reading her mind, Cindy put her hands on her hips, declaring proudly, "My brother went with nothing! Our grandfather said boys should be raised tough, not spoiled. Me? I was raised like a princess." Jethro gave his sister a look of amused resignation. "Alright, princess. What would Your Highness like to eat?" Cindy listed two dishes. Darcy added two more.Sitting around was boring. Cindy suddenly remembered, "I think there's a barbecue grill here somewhere. Let me look." She actually found one. "I'll do the barbecue! There's a small balcony outside. Let's go there!" She was enthusiastic. But as a pampered young lady, she'd never done this before. Just lighting the charcoal was a headache. Just then, Zephyr, wearing an apron, peeked out from the kitchen. "Need help?" Cindy was stubborn. "No." Darcy hadn't grilled before either. She tugged Cindy's sleeve. "Maybe we should let Mr. Knight help." Cindy remained silent. Zephyr, who had appeared beside them unnoticed, began expertly arranging the charcoal, lighting it, and setting up the grill. "All set," he said, glancing at Cindy. Cindy pouted. "Didn't need your help."Unfazed, Zephyr gave a slight smile and went back to the kitchen. Once he was gone, Darcy leaned closer to Cindy. "I think Mr. Knight is really nice. About what happened back then... if you still can't let it go, maybe ask him how he feels about you now." From Darcy's perspective, both were single. Rather than holding onto the past, why not try again? But Cindy had a strong sense of pride. The memory of being rejected was fresh and painful. "No way," she said firmly. "I would never like a man who rejected me!" She finished, then noticed Darcy's face go awkward. Realizing something, she turned around. Zephyr was standing right behind them, holding a skewer of smoked brisket bites, frozen in place. The air grew unbearably still. After a long moment, Zephyr seemed to snap out of it. He walked over, placed the brisket skewer on the grill, his expression as calm and unchanged as ever.
